Dark Light

When you hear about a game like No Man’s Sky, that’s going to be entirely procedurally generated and essentially infinite in size, it’s hard to comprehend what sort of score might need to be produced to go with it. Just think about how repetitive the radio stations can get in Fallout or Grand Theft Auto, and then imagine listening to the same thing over and over again for the rest of time (in theory, obviously).

Then think about what the game comprises – alien landscapes, sweeping vistas, unknowable creatures and unfathomable distance – combined with that reliance on the absurdity of the mathematics and mechanics of it all, there’s really only one band that comes to mind: 65daysofstatic.

Sean Murray of Hello Games had the exact same thought as us, and contacted 65daysofstatic personally to ask them to put together the No Man’s Sky soundtrack. That’s one hell of an ask and two years later – time essentially spent redesigning the soundtrack wheel, from the ground up, at an almost molecular level – 65daysofstatic have completed the No Man’s Sky soundtrack, and are preparing to take the mind-bending experience on a world tour.

“Being involved with No Man’s Sky is as unlikely as it is exciting. Two years of our lives have disappeared into a black hole and we’ve been spat out into another dimension. The project has pushed us to explore new processes and techniques, to rethink our relationship with our own music and to essentially soundtrack every narrative thread of a ‘choose your own adventure’ novel that exists only in our minds. We’re really proud of the results, and can’t wait to release the album and play it live.” – 65daysofstatic

The No Man’s Sky soundtrack promises to be like nothing we’ve ever heard before, based on this preview of a track called Red Parallax from 65daysofstatic’s SoundCloud page.

Spine-tingling stuff.
