Huawei Claims They Will Stick With Android as Long is it Remains Open

Last week we shared a rumor that Huawei was developing their own OS to potentially ditch Android in the future. Since then, the company's CEO, Richard Yu, took to social media to dispel this rumor (at least partially). Yu did not explicitly state that Huawei was not developing a new OS; he simply stated that Huawei will stick with the Android OS for as long as Google keeps it open.

That almost seems like an off the cuff warning to Google, although that may be reading too much into it. What do you folks think?

Sounds more like a CYA (cover your assets) statement to me. Gives them an out. Glad to see they're committed to the OS that's gotten them this far. I took a chance on them when I bought my 6P and I'd happily consider another of their devices in the future (if they get rid of their hideous skin...).

As someone who's been with Android since nearly the beginning (OG Moto Droid on drop day), it's been very disheartening to see Google move farther and farther away from the openness that was the hallmark of Android back then. It seems like Google becomes more Apple-like with each new iteration, more closed, less freedom.

but while samsung controls 3x market share of Huawei, it's dominance is shrinking while Huawei's is growing. If this keeps up, I might be right.

I'd like to see you be correct. I still haven't forgiven Samsung for my Verizon Note 4.

I think much of this is attributed to the nexus lineup. But they do have comparable phones for cheaper prices. Many people are OK with spending less and getting slightly less features. I mean i'd be OK with spending 300 less but it not be waterproof, it's just something i'm not worried about. I think Samsung will be the leader for quite some time to come. Samsung does have many budget phones, but i think their flagship phones will need to start selling for less if they are going to want the masses to upgrade their phones to a flagship. It's mainly becoming much like the PC market, it's over-saturated.
