Student Death Prompts Texas Bill That Would Make Cyberbullying a Crime

School districts would have to create cyberbullying policies that would give them authority to investigate bullying.

(TNS) — Texas may create a law that will turn cyberbullying into a crime.

State Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, is working with Sen. José Menéndez, D-San Antonio, to develop a law named after a San Antonio student who died by suicide after being bullied.

"Count on us to work closely with our colleagues and constituents as we prepare to file 'David's Law' and other legislation for the 2017 session that would empower school districts to prevent cyberbullying and discipline its perpetrators," Zaffirini said in a statement to Laredo Morning Times.

David's Law would require school districts to implement cyberbullying-related policies and authorize them to investigate bullying, on- or off-campus.

The bill would also allow school districts and law enforcement to work together to investigate cyberbullying.

David's Law would make it a misdemeanor to electronically harass or bully anyone under the age of 18.
