Something magical happens in the summer in Philadelphia. As the temperatures rise, streets transform into communal party spaces, parks become urban oases and the city’s cultural venues roar to life.
This summer, blockbuster events like The Roots Picnic at The Mann Center and the Philly Pride March & Festival all return, drawing thousands of residents and visitors to enjoy massive, only-in-Philly experiences.
Music fills the air with shows by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran and Drake, along with larger-than-life performances by the Philadelphia Orchestra and Opera Philadelphia.
At the center of it all, the Wawa Welcome America celebration features 16 days of events — from Juneteenth to the Fourth of July — celebrating freedom to liberty in the birthplace of American democracy.
Looking for something more low-key? Philly offers relaxing summer fun all season long at Parks on Tap, the Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest and Spruce Street Harbor Park.
And, of course, the world premiere of Disney100: The Exhibition continues at The Franklin Institute.

Lace up! This spring, the Rothman Orthopaedics Roller Rink at Dilworth Park paints the town rainbow with colorful springtime skate sessions. Vibrant overhead art and the checkerboard rink floor bring good times and retro vibes. For more fun, chow down at the Dilworth Park Café, fuel up at the Air Grille pop-up beer garden or hop your way through the Dilworth Park dancing fountain. Advance reservations for hour-long skating sessions are strongly recommended, and discounted matinee skate sessions are offered Mondays and Tuesdays.

When the ice melts and the shades come out, it’s time for Independence Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest. The annual Penn’s Landing extravaganza boasts boardwalk games, carnival rides, mini-golf, an arcade, the city’s largest outdoor roller skating rink and much, much more. The fest has plenty of food and drink options on deck, including faves like the funnel cake at Skelly’s, the creative cocktails at The Lodge Bar or the Crabfries at Chickie’s & Pete’s. General admission to the fest is free (everything else is pay-as-you-go).

Enthusiasts of riverside chilling enjoy hammocks, patio and arcade games, musical performances and tasty treats from local purveyors while strolling the boardwalk at this warm-weather attraction. Spruce Street Harbor Park is the perfect escape for visitors looking to relax and locals hoping to unwind.

It’s shaping up to be another stellar summer at The Oval — the pop-up urban oasis located just across the street from the famous Rocky Steps and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. For 2023, The Oval features a 21,000-square-foot beer garden, lawn games, an enormous Ben Franklin-inspired ground mural from Mural Arts Philadelphia, kid-friendly activations and a rotating lineup of local food trucks. Things kick off July 7 with a free concert headlined by Philly brass band SNACKTIME. Also taking the stage: DJ Killsing and songwriter Rachel Andie.

Excellent news for fans of free summer fun (so … all of us). The Oval — Philly’s eight-acre warm-weather urban oasis on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway — is extending its free Parkway programming through Labor Day with the announcement of Oval Live, a four-day end-of-the-season extravaganza. This marks the first time ever that residents and visitors can enjoy the pop-up park on the Parkway this late in the season. On the docket: a free movie night (September 1), a free day of live music programming (September 2), a free family fun day (September 3) and a free wellness day (September 4).

Philly’s roving beer garden brings brews and bites to neighborhood parks and green spaces in nearly every corner of the city this summer. At each stop, visitors can enjoy draft beers from Mainstay Independent Brewing, cocktails, and finger foods and sandwiches. The pop up hits a new space each week, so keep an eye on the official calendar to see where it’s headed next!

Move over, Friday: Thursday might be Philly’s favorite happy hour and date night this summer thanks to Old City Eats. More than 20 participating bars, restaurants and eateries in Old City offer small plate and drink specials from 5 to 7 p.m. every Thursday through August 31, 2023. In addition to returning participants like The Olde Bar, Stratus Lounge and Lucha Cartel, five new spots join the party for 2023, including Amina, Franklin Social American Kitchen & Bar and Vista Peru. This year, the Old City Eats kicks off with an outdoor block party on 2nd and Market Streets featuring food, drink and live music (Thursday, June 1, 2023).

Philly Beer Week returns this June with 10 days of events, tastings, happy hours, pub crawls and foamy fun. Since 2007, the annual tradition has brought together breweries from around the city — and country — to show us all why Philly is one of the best beer cities. No summertime sadness here: The dog days mark the start of Philly’s favorite Wednesday night party. Center City District SIPS features happy hour deals at participating restaurants and bars all summer long, with $7 cocktails, $6 wine, $5 beer and half-priced apps at establishments like Double Knot and the Air Grille Garden at Dilworth Park. This year, you can also look forward to SIPS Style, which promotes Wednesday discounts on merchandise and services at select Center City retailers

Take a sip on the wild side at the Philadelphia Zoo’s Summer Ale Festival. This 21-and-up annual event features live music and entertainment; scrumptious food trucks; open animal exhibits; and over 100 award-winning craft beers, seltzers and ciders. The House of Mouse celebrates a century of dazzling audiences with a brand-new exhibition, making its world premiere in Philadelphia. Disney100: The Exhibition opens the vaults for behind-the-scenes glimpses into the creation of the company’s most popular characters, films, shows and attractions, offering 10 themed galleries with interactive installations covering everything from Snow White to Star Wars. “Is the sun rising or setting on the experiment of American democracy?” Nearly two dozen artists interpret that question in new artworks that appear in this collaborative exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP). This landmark exhibit invites visitors to consider complex issues from multiple viewpoints.

Through Sunday, November 26, 2023 This new exhibition charts the life of James Forten, a free man of African descent who fought in the war for American independence in 1781, then returned to Philadelphia to become a successful businessman, philanthropist and stalwart abolitionist. Chronicle Forten’s life and follow his family’s 100-year story from the American Revolution through the lead up to the Civil War and women’s suffrage movement.

The country’s oldest and largest event of its kind features equestrian disciplines, exhibitions and an old-fashioned country fair at the Devon Show Grounds.

Film fans can find works by established and emerging Latino filmmakers at the annual Philadelphia Latino Film Festival. Peddler’s Village shines in the summertime, with special parties and festivals featuring tasty, creative and family-friendly activities all season long:

This popular twice-a-year event — the oldest outdoor fine arts show in the country (96 years strong in 2023) — returns to the perimeter of Rittenhouse Square park and features works by more than 140 professional artists specializing in media ranging from sculpture to pastels.

One of the nation’s oldest residential streets hosts a traditional 1930s-style celebration during its annual Fete Day. Visitors get the rare chance to wander Elfreth’s Alley, exploring the history and flair of 18th- and 19th-century Philadelphia homes. The fun continues outdoors with local food, refreshments and entertainment.

The largest African American street festival in the country, the ODUNDE Festival (now in its 48th year) spans 15 blocks and draws up to 500,000 people annually — making it one of Philly’s biggest fests of the year. ODUNDE celebrates Black and African culture with a week of fun events, all culminating on Sunday, June 11 with a festival featuring more than 100 vendors and two stages of live entertainment.

Dancers, artists, musicians and vendors of all flavors take over Fairmount Park for the 2023 West Park Arts Fest. BalletX and the Philadelphia Jazz Tap Ensemble take the stage along with performers including Badd Kitti and the Urban Guerilla Orchestra. Attendees can also purchase handcrafted goods by local artists or grab a bite to eat at one of the many food vendors. Bring the fam: This free event is chock-full of kid-friendly activities.

Spend a day celebrating the world’s oldest endurance race — literally. The Simeone Museum celebrates the 100th anniversary of the 24-hour Le Mans Automotive Endurance Race with 24 hours of straight programming. Tickets are required, and the jam-packed event includes a simulcast of the live race, film showings, a Forza game tournament, food, photo ops and driving demonstrations featuring over 36 of the rarest and most valuable sports cars in the world. Buckle up.

Want the best bang for your buck? A beloved West Philly tradition, the twice-a-year Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll returns to University City with free family-friendly programming, pay-as-you-go food, and — best of all — $1, $3 and $5 deals from vendors and neighborhood businesses.

Franklin Square lights up the night with the return of the ticketed Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival in Old City. Celebrate the Year of the Rabbit among dozens of spectacular glowing installations (some never seen before), live stage performances, festival-themed crafts by Chinese artisans, and international food and drink — including the return of the super-popular Dragon Beer Garden.

One of the largest outdoor art fests in the tristate area returns to Philly’s Manayunk neighborhood for two days of food, fun and creativity. This free-to-attend festival highlights artwork and crafts by artists from around the country, from glass and ceramics to photography and paintings.

Phoenixville, Chester County — where parts of the campy 1950s horror/sci-fi flick The Blob were filmed — hosts a wacky three-day festival of film screenings, live stage shows, themed competitions and even a recreation of the pivotal movie scene in which frightened townspeople flee the Colonial Theatre. This year, enjoy scary-good music and 70-plus vendors at the Blobfest Street Fair (Saturday, July 15, 2023) or blob for your life at the Blob Run 5k (Sunday, July 16, 2023). This West Philly festival draws thousands of revelers each year to celebrate jazz music in all its flavors. Tap your toes to some of Philly’s funkiest jazz musicians, visit community vendors to buy locally-made goods, or take a load off with cool treats and summer eats at the food trucks. Showcasing films by Black, Brown and Indigenous artists from around the world, the BlackStar Film Festival brings features, shorts, documentaries, panel discussions and parties to multiple venues along the Avenue of the Arts. The Oscar-qualifying fest celebrates some of the most influential voices in filmmaking and visual arts. The 2023 event — in its 12th year — features 93 films (including 19 world premieres) representing 31 countries with screenings at the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Suzanne Roberts Theatre and Lightbox Film Center.

Northeast Philly is home to the brand-new, groovy Otherworld Philadelphia — an out-of-this-world experience featuring a treasure trove of trippy visuals, walk-through art installations, mind-bending mixed reality playgrounds and a mysterious backstory that runs through the entire attraction. The first Sunday in August is Northern Liberties’ time to shine. Since 2008, the annual 2nd Street Festival has brought thousands of revelers to the neighborhood to enjoy live music, merchants, cocktails and the finest fare NoLibs (and beyond) has to offer.

Traditional Ukrainian folk music and dance, authentic food (including a barbecue pit), and exciting arts and crafts are hallmarks of the Ukrainian Folk Festival in North Wales, returning for its 32nd year in late summer.

Did you know that the “Mushroom Capital of the World” is just outside of Philadelphia? To celebrate its unusual claim to fame, the charming town of Kennett Square hosts a two-day Mushroom Festival every September, full of fungi-themed food, music, exhibits and activities.

Spotlighting the bustling arts scene in Bucks County, the Doylestown Arts Festival is a two-day juried art, music and food showcase along the streets of Doylestown. This year — the festival’s 32nd anniversary — attendees can expect over 150 artists specializing in glass, pottery, wood, printmaking, live art demonstrations, music and a vast food court.

This September, the global symbol of human rights visits Philadelphia on her 6,000-mile walk across the United States. A 12-foot-tall puppet representing a Syrian refugee child, Little Amal has traveled through 13 countries since 2021 — and has seen some of the world’s most iconic landmarks. Little Amal’s journey through Philly kicks off a free citywide public festival in collaboration with local artists and community partners. At ease, soldier — it’s chow time! Come support local vets from across America’s armed forces as VetFest returns to Malvern, Chester County. The family-friendly food-truck- and-craft-brewery festival features over two dozen veteran-owned businesses and non-profits offering delicious food, local beer, craft distilled spirits, coffee, apparel, VSO services and more — including Farina Pasta & Noodle, Semper Pie, Ten7 Brewing, VK Brewing Co. and Fragout Clothing Company — alongside live music from Veteran non-profit Operation Encore. You don’t have to be a vet or a military family to attend — the festival is open to all.

Philly’s big Pride celebration is back! Celebrating “love, light and liberation,” this year’s Pride March and Festival — presented by Galaei’s Pride 365 Initiative — kicks off with a free-to-join Pride march from 6th Street and Walnut Street, followed by a big festival in the vibrant Gayborhood. Festivalgoers can expect multiple blocks of live performances, pay-as-you-go food trucks, alcohol- and tobacco-free zones for both families and sober attendees, a relaxation zone and plenty of resources from local LGBTQ+ groups.

Now in its sixth year, the Philly Pride Run lets its colors fly with a 5K race and a 1 Mile Fun Run across the City of Brotherly Love. Prizes are awarded for the top three female, male, non-binary and wheelchair competitors, and all proceeds support The William Way LGBT Community Center.

Delaware County keeps the party going with Delco Pride 2023. The festival offers food vendors, a live DJ, music and dancing, face and nail painting, kid-friendly activities, and much more. And this year, expect to see Pride programming throughout the county, including the very first Delco Pride Parade. This event is free to attend, but tickets are required.

Historic Germantown celebrates Juneteenth during its 17th annual Juneteenth Festival. Hosted by the Johnson House Historic Site, the annual (and free!) fest celebrates the 158th anniversary of the Black emancipation from enslavement with joyful music performances, historical reenactments, community conversations, food trucks, a cultural marketplace and much more.

Launched locally in 2016, the annual Philadelphia Juneteenth Parade & Festival has grown into a daylong event. This year, attendees can head to West Philadelphia for a parade beginning on 52nd Street and Parkside Avenue, followed by a celebration at Malcolm X Park with food and art vendors, a music festival, and a children’s village.

This 16-day festival in the nation’s birthplace includes dozens of free and fabulous events across the city, including free admission to museums and attractions on select days, musical performances from local and national artists, community-centered events, Wawa Hoagie Day and more. The event, expanded in recent years to incorporate Juneteenth celebrations, culminates with a stunning fireworks display over the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the Fourth of July.

P-Ville kicks off the Fourth with an all-American barbecue picnic, live music, and family-friendly entertainment and activities.

The annual music festival curated by and named for Philly hip-hop band The Roots always has an exciting lineup, highlighting both groundbreaking up-and-comers and legendary acts alike — plus a podcast stage featuring, among others, our own Love + Grit. For the 2023 festival, attendees can look forward to performances from the legendary Ms. Lauryn Hill, Usher and Philly’s own Lil Uzi Vert and Eve. Famous for his mathematical suite of albums, English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran completes the cycle with his new album – (pronounced “Subtract”). Drawing on heavy life themes like his wife’s cancer recovery and the death of a friend, the album packs an emotional punch.

The Grateful Dead spin-off/supergroup consisting of former Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, plus John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti are calling it quits after one final tour. A duo of uber melodic proportions, Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks co-headline the Linc this summer. Alicia’s Keys to the Summer Tour reimagines the concert experience with an innovative, colorful and sensory 360-degree performance.

Who run the world? The only correct answer is Beyoncé. Queen Bey brings her highly anticipated Renaissance tour to the sports complex complete with elaborate choreography, sets, costumes and vocals.
Two of the most influential voices in hip-hop take the stage in South Philly for what is Drake’s first tour in five years. Spanning the past decade of Drake’s career, the It’s All A Blur tour will celebrate moments like Hotline Bling through Her Loss, a collaborative album with 21 Savage.
You’re going to have Unholy stuck in your head for the rest of the day. The immensely decorated artist Sam Smith (seriously, they’ve netted Grammy, BRIT, Golden Globe and Oscar awards) hits the road for the first time since 2018, touring behind their fourth album, Gloria.
WXPN, the public radio station of the University of Pennsylvania, brings together musical legends and new performers along the Camden waterfront at this can’t-miss annual fest at Wiggins Waterfront Park. This year’s lineup includes Old Crow Medicine Show, Tegan and Sara, Allison Russell and many more.

It’s showtime! Based on Tim Burton’s cult classic film, BEETLEJUICE follows the darkly humorous story of a ghost couple trying to haunt the strange inhabitants of their former home — of course, not without the help of a certain stripes-loving demon. Equal parts funny, heartwarming and indecent, “the ghost with the most” puts on a performance that’ll knock you dead. (Just don’t say his name three times.)

Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 hit film gets the full musical treatment in this sexy stage adaptation, which scored 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Following a cast of performers at the Moulin Rouge, a cabaret club in Paris at the turn of the 20th century, the story is one of mistaken identity, class struggle and heartache.
Featuring a Tony Award-winning score, this stage adaptation of Robert James Waller’s best-selling romance novel follows a four-day affair between an Italian woman living far from home in 1965 Iowa and a traveling photographer from National Geographic.

Hakuna Matata! Disney’s Broadway smash hit brings a diverse cast, stunning costumes, soaring visuals, and iconic music from Elton John and Tim Rice to the Academy of Music stage for a highly anticipated limited run.
Get excited for Festival O23, the fifth iteration of Opera Philadelphia’s popular and contemporary season opener. The 11-day event features live performances, opera film screenings and panel discussions at venues across the city. This year’s performances include Grammy-winning soprano Ana María Martínez, award-winning baritone Quinn Kelsey and more. Also on the docket is the global debut of 10 Days in a Madhouse, with five performances at The Wilma Theatre. The experimental, psychological opera — inspired by true events — follows an undercover reporter as she exposes troubling conditions inside a women’s mental hospital in 1880s New York City.

’Tis the season for bedlam at the Bank as the Fightin’ Phils look to run it back following an unbelievable 2022 season that resulted in a Red October to remember.
