A fundraising campaign to save a popular city farm from closure has already attracted almost half of its target figure, raising hopes it will be saved.

Donations have been flooding in since Gorgie City Farm revealed on Friday that it needed £100,000 to continue.

In just four days, £45,000 has been raised for the Edinburgh attraction, which is under threat due to rising costs and a drop in external funding.

The farm's general manager, Josiah Lockhart, said the public response had been "overwhelming".

He said: "The people of Edinburgh are really behind this. We raised £13,000 in the first eight hours."

Mr Lockhart added: "It's something that's loved by people in the city.

"We are now the last city farm like this in the middle of a city in Scotland. It's a really important resource."

Gorgie City Farm, which has never charged an entry fee in almost four decades of operation, attracted 169,000 visitors last year.

It runs programmes for young and vulnerable people and works with more than 100 volunteers every week.
