Meow! Musical 'Cats' Returning To Broadway This Summer

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- "Cats,'' once Broadway's longest-running show, will not be a "Memory'' for long -- the musical is coming back to New York.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical will return this summer to the Neil Simon Theatre at 250 West 52nd St. under its original director, Trevor Nunn.

Previews begin July 14 and opening night is Aug. 2

"In 1982, the arrival of CATS took Broadway by storm," Co-producers The Shubert Organization and The Nederlander Organization said in a statement. "We are delighted to join together to bring Andrew Lloyd Webber's phenomenal musical back to Broadway."

"Cats'' was based on "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats,'' a collection of poems by T.S. Eliot. It bid farewell to Broadway in 2000 after an almost 18-year run. It is now the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history.

Since its premiere, "Cats" has been performed in 30 countries and translated into 15 languages.

"Cats'' was the first of the big British musicals with lavish settings and pop scores to invade Broadway in the 1980s. It earned a fortune for Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh, who went on to bring "Les Miserables,'' 'The Phantom of the Opera'' and "Miss Saigon'' to Broadway.
