Follow this simple how to make napkins project by Sarah Moore. Choose contrasting fabrics and colours to create an informal, contemporary look. Upcycle old tablecloths and sheets to create plain squares to edge; dye them to complement the colours of a room or table setting, if you wish.

You will need

  • fabric marker pen
  • ruler
  • a piece of linen or cotton, just under 50cm square
  • a strip of fine cotton edging, 10cm x 1m
  • pinking shears and pens
  • sewing maching and iron

Method

  1.  With a fabric marker pen (this creates lines that disappear when they come into contact with glue), mark two 5cm-wide strips onto the edging fabric and then use pinking shears to cut out.
  2. Sew these pieces together at one end, right sides together, to form one 2m-long strip.
  3. Carefully fold and press down the length to form the binding. Pin in place, starting in the middle of one of the napkin edges, and pressing and mitring the corners as you go, for a neat finish. Overlap the end by about 1cm.
  4. Machine-stitch right through the trimming, making sure that you are catching the napkin fabric inside. Remove the pins as you go.
  5. Repeat the process to create a set of napkins.
