By now, it’s safe to assume that we may never see those hotly-anticipated reunions from The Smiths and Oasis. How’s this for a consolation prize, though: members of both bands coming together as some two-headed beast of Britpop majesty? That’s what happened Thursday evening, as Noel Gallagher joined Johnny Marr for an encore performance at London’s O2 Brixton Academy.

Both The Smiths and Oasis may be familiar with interpersonal drama, but Marr and Gallagher are practically BFFs. “I’d like to introduce someone who has been a friend of mine for 20 years,” Marr told the crowd beforehand. “One of the greatest songwriters from this country. He’s a good man, I think he’s got a big future ahead of him. Mr. Noel Gallagher.” From there, the duo launched into a spirited cover of Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life” and straight into an equally inspired rendition of The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now?” The pair ended everything with a rather sincere embrace, proving that not everybody in iconic British bands hate each other.

The duo also recently spent time together in the studio for Gallagher’s new album as High Flying Birds. “The Ballad Of Mighty” appears on Chasing Yesterday, which hits shelves on March 2nd, 2015 via Sour Mash Records. Meanwhile, Marr recently released his sophomore album, Playland.
