Topic: Ditching the West - Why Southeast Asia matters to Indian startups

The fact that Southeast Asia needs to be the next step for Indian startups looking to expand is clear. But how do they go about it? SEA is huge with diverse cultures and economies, and it is a daunting task for startups to try to comprehend this labyrinth.

And that is why we have Takeshi Ebihara of Rebright Partners with us. He will take us through what it takes to expand in the true sense of the word. How can Indian startups understand local needs? How can they adapt to cater to different markets? How can they understand the pulse of different audiences? But before we go there, first understand which market to ease into first in order to successfully grab the SEA pie.

For Ebihara-san, that market is Indonesia.

What is it about Indonesia and why should India put the spotlight on it? There are more similarities between the two countries than normally perceived. For starters, Indonesia is the largest country in SEA, with the fourth largest population in the world. We really don’t have to say anything about India’s population. Indonesia is a young country and has a fast growing middle class with disposable incomes – same as India. It has a rich cultural history like India.

Majority of Indonesians are also accessing internet for the first time with their mobile devices. Like our country, it also has an untapped e-commerce market. Indonesia is also an emerging economy.

With so many commonalities, will it be easier for Indian startups to enter and succeed in SEA? Does it make sense to first test in the Indonesian markets before moving to other countries in the region?

Who better than Ebihara-san to answer these questions and guide entrepreneurs in their expansion journey?
