Beach pool to go ahead

Stirling mayor Giovanni Italiano says a $26 million pool at Scarborough Beach will go ahead with or without State and Federal Government funding.

Unveiling the first images of the proposed pool today, Mr Italiano said the council had asked for about half of the cost in government funding.

But he said the 50m eight-lane chlorinated pool, which would be close to the ocean but not in it, would go ahead either way. In that case, ratepayers would effectively pick up the tab.

"The city has worked very hard on making Scarborough an active family friendly hub of activity and the new beach pool will be the jewel in the crown for the precinct," he said.

"With the addition of this new beach pool Scarborough will become the Bondi of the West as a tourist destination, a great place to live, work, relax and swim in every season of the year."

The council is scheduled to vote on the design at a meeting tonight.

Construction would start about this time next year and the pool would be completed in late 2017.
