NYIT Students Bound for International Workshop in Indonesia

Five NYIT School of Management students and a faculty advisor are headed to an international workshop in Indonesia next week to showcase their global business skills.

Organized by the University of Applied Sciences Suedwestfalen in Germany, the workshop in Java, Indonesia, features a business management simulation competition and other activities designed to show students what it takes to run a company. The immersive experience gives students “exposure and opportunities to face many of the challenges they will encounter in a global market space,” said School of Management Dean Jess Boronico, Ph.D.

Cross-cultural learning experiences are key for students, said Associate Professor Joanne Scillitoe, Ph.D., who will accompany the group. Organizers will place each NYIT student on a different five-member team to encourage interaction and strategic collaboration among students from universities in the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Belgium, Russia, German, Indonesia, and China.

"Working together with new people from different parts of the world will help me expand my communication skills and understand how to work on a foreign team," said student Neetika Nath.

Following the simulation, students will fly to Jakarta and then to Jogyakarta, to visit temples, a textile firm, and a Batik crafting company. Later on, they'll head north to Singapore for more sightseeing before their flight home.

"Indonesia is not a typical place people have been,” said Jennifer Rock, a third-year international business major. “I've never left the country and am excited to be somewhere completely different and learn about life and business in another country.”
