It's often said that communication is key for any relationship. The way Rich and DeeDee Adams have had to communicate over these past 50 years of marriage has been more complicated than most. Both are visually impaired and have technically never laid eyes on each other before.

The pair met while in school and, after striking up a correspondence that included taped recordings, they began their life together. Learning from their own day-to-day lives, they began to teach others how to navigate through a life without sight.

"We would go from a bunch of different schools that had visually impaired kids…I would help them get large print things, or talking gadgets," says Rich.

They are also passing along the life lessons they have learned to their 5 five children and 17 grandchildren. But they say the best advice they can offer to their family is to not let life pass them by.

"Each day is a gift. Life's too short to be gloomy," says DeeDee.
