Walnuts Proclaimed the Healthiest Nut

Nuts are a great snack; a little protein, some healthy oils, perfect for curbing your appetite, and loaded with lots of good stuff our body needs.  But which nut is best?

Earlier this week some researchers announced the answer: walnuts!

Here’s a direct quote from Joe Vinson, Ph.D., the head of the study …

“Walnuts rank above peanuts, almonds, pecans, pistachios and other nuts. A handful of walnuts contains almost twice as much antioxidants as an equivalent amount of any other commonly consumed nut. But unfortunately, people don’t eat a lot of them.”

Remember, we have to be careful with the calories here.  Despite the fact that walnuts and other nuts are great with antioxidant protection and filled with healthy oils and protein, a little goes a long way.  Dr. Vinson said you only need seven whole walnuts to get the health benefits.

It’s also better to eat walnuts (and all other nuts) raw if you can.  Roasted nuts lose a lot of their antioxidant punch.

So sprinkle them on your salad, or drop a few in a sandwich or wrap, or just crunch on a few as a snack when you’re hungry.  We buy a big bag in our house and dole them out during the week.  I keep a few in my purse when I’m hungry and can’t get to healthy food right away and my husband stashes some in his desk.

Do you eat nuts?  Do you think it’s worth it to try walnuts for the health benefits?  I have to say I’ve been on an almond kick lately but I might circle back to walnuts the next time I’m in the grocery store.

Cheers,

Lisa
