Portland's Tilikum Crossing light rail bridge comes alive during lighting test (Photos)

Testing of lighting on Tilikum Crossing, the new Portland-Milwaukie light rail bridge across the Willamette River, resumed on Dec. 4, 2014 and continues for three nights.

Once the bridge opens in the fall of 2015, TriMet's new pedestrian and transit bridge will be lit by 178 LED lights focused on the cables, towers and abutments.

The lighting is an environmentally-interactive art piece designed by San Francisco artist Douglas Hollis and his wife, the late Anna Valentina Murch.

In October, the first test of the LED lights focused on light placement on the 40 bridge cables, the four tower pylons above and below the deck, and the two land-side abutments.

This December test allows Hollis to fine tune the lighting program that translates the seasons into subtle color and motion changes based on the natural conditions of the Willamette River.

Once the commissioning of the lights is complete, the lights will be turned off until September 2015.
