It's dream come true for terminally-ill boy
HYDERABAD: A 10-year-old terminally-ill boy's dream to become Hyderabad police commissioner came true on Wednesday. Clad in khakis, sporting insignia and holding a baton just like the commissioner, the child played the perfect top cop for a day.
The boy is Mohammed Sadiq, 10, son of Mohammed Raheemuddin, a transport businessman from Peddapally in Karimnagar district.
Sadiq, who has been suffering from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), is undergoing treatment at MNJ Institute of Oncology & Regional Cancer Centre in Hyderabad since May 2014.
When representatives of NGO 'Make-A-Wish Foundation' met Sadiq at the hospital a month ago, he told them that his dream was to become the Hyderabad police commissioner one day. "Normally, when we ask them to make a wish, most children, suffering from acute illness, wish to meet celebrities or their heroes. However, Sadiq wanted to become police commissioner and we approached Hyderabad CP M Mahendar Reddy," said Dr Pushpa Devi Jain, programme coordinator, Make-A-Wish-Foundation of India, Hyderabad.
The police commissioner responded positively to the proposal of the NGO representatives and agreed to make Sadiq police commissioner of Hyderabad on Wednesday. According to Sadiq's father, a police vehicle, driven and escorted by cops, picked up his son from MNJ hospital on Wednesday morning. Clad in full police gear, Sadiq arrived at the commissoner's office at Basheerbagh at 11 am and received a guard of honour.
Mahendar Reddy along with his senior colleagues escorted the 'special commissioner' to his chambers. After occupying his chair, Sadiq even took charge by 'signing' a file.
Later, addressing the media, 'commissioner' Sadiq said that he wants to chase away rowdies from the city and appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony. "We hope Sadiq's health improves after this and in future he will become the commissioner of police for Hyderabad," Mahendar Reddy said.
After the event, Sadiq was taken back to MNJ Hospital. Sadiq's ailment was first identified when he went to a local hospital in Karimnagar along with his mother to get treatment for her thyroid problem. "We observed that veins near the neck portion of Sadiq were swollen. When we told the doctor in Karimnagar about this, he examined Sadiq and immediately referred him to MNJ hospital in Hyderabad in May. Since then, Sadiq is undergoing treatment here," Raheemuddin said.
