Top 5 Private Club Radio Shows for Club Managers

We've been honored to have some wonderful guests on our show offering their insight into the role of the private club manager. Topics have run the gamut from board governance to budgeting and everything in between (including oil wells!). Here are the top 5 shows to educate and inform the GM or COO. Enjoy!

Norm Spitzig, MCM

Norm Spitzig, Principal & Senior Partner in Master Club Advisors. Norm was one of the original General Managers to be awarded the distinction, Master Club Manager by the CMAA in 1995.

During the interview, we touch on the attributes that make a great private club, and what make for great board governance. We’ll find out what boards really want from their general managers and we ask Norm a question that came from one of our loyal listeners…what makes a candidate for general manager that stands out to a board or a hiring professional? Since Norm is in the business of executive placement I thought he’d be just the gentleman to ask, and his answer did not disappoint.

Michael Crandal, CNG

Michael is an accomplished private club General Manger, Speaker and Author. During our chat with Michael, we discuss what has changed at clubs, especially in the way of expectations for the General Manager, and we take a deep dive into what Michael calls "The Briefcase." It’s a skill set that every GM needs to have these days.

Jeff Morgan, CEO of the CMAA

During this discussion with Jeff, we’ll learn what it’s like to manage an association with over 6,500 members from all corners of the globe.

What challenges CMAA members are facing on a global scale including how to recruit younger hospitality industry professionals. We’ll take a deep dive into the association’s 5 year strategic plan that was just released. Jeff gives some great advice on how to deal with a quickly changing and diverse membership at your club.

Miles Tucker, Hillcrest Country Club

Miles Tucker is the GM and Chief Operating Officer of Hillcrest Country Club. Hillcrest CC is a very special club for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is their oil production. Yes, you read that right, there is a working oil well at this club! In addition to oil, the National Football League is reported to have been formed there, and at least 8 members of the club have been featured on postage stamps. It’s really a unique place to say the least.

Beyond history, Miles and I discuss what a rebranding really is when it comes to a country club and what things you should consider when branding or rebranding a club. Here’s a hint, it’s a whole lot more than your logo.

During the interview we'll get Miles' take on the value of effective capital planning as well as his opinion on the facilities that excite and attract members. Hillcrest has some special ones including bee hives!

And, imagine a 0% turnover rate in your kitchen staff over 9 month’s time? At Hillcrest, that’s a reality, and you’ll find out what Miles and his team did to make that happen.

Gregg Patterson, Former GM of the Beach Club

Gregg Patterson, prolific speaker and writer about the private club industry and, of course, General Manager of the Beach Club for 33 years. He graced the cover of Club Management magazine as the 2015 Club Executive of the year.

If you’ve ever met Gregg you know he has a dynamic personality and his stage presence is larger than life. You can hear the passion he has for the private club industry in every word he speaks. He’s so passionate, you might almost think it’s an act, but I can assure you it’s not. He’s a man who is on fire. On fire for something he loves and it shows through.

If you’re a GM or an aspiring one, you’re going to LOVE this episode. During the interview, we’ll take a journey to find out what a General Manager needs to do to inspire and instill loyalty in his or her staff and board and learn what Gregg thinks is the hardest part of the club business. We also discuss what Gregg thinks you should look for when hiring the right staff for your club.
