When you dream of working from home in your pajamas—who doesn't?—does it really matter where you prop your laptop? When it comes to whether you work from the couch or the comfort of your bed, no. But, according to a new analysis, your address may have a little something to do with whether you get the freedom to work from home.

Telecommuting job site FlexJobs analyzed the job-posting activity of more than 40,000 companies from its our database last year, and identified the top 10 states where companies recruited the most stay-at-home workers.

The site found that people who want to work from home have the best chance of finding jobs in California, where companies such as SAP, Groupon, and VMware regularly recruit telecommuting employees. Texas and New York closely followed, with the second and third highest number of telecommuting job postings last year.

Here is FlexJob’s top 10 list of the best states to work when you want to work from home:

  1. California
  2. Texas
  3. New York
  4. Florida
  5. Illinois
  6. Pennsylvania
  7. Georgia
  8. North Carolina
  9. Virginia
  10. Massachusetts

You may be asking: Why does it matter where I live if I don’t work in the office? As FlexJobs explains, while you’re day-to-day workload may not take you into your company’s headquarters, employers like to have their employees on-hand for in-person meetings that may pop up. They also value having employees close by to meet with clients, or to gather for out-of-office but work-related functions. That's not to mention any state tax laws they may need to follow.

“So,” FlexJobs recommends, “if you want to work from home, pay particular attention when searching for telecommuting job listings. A company will usually make it clear if they need candidates from a particular location, whether it’s a city, state, or country.”
