One month after launch, 3.2 million people are playing Destiny every day

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Destiny has about 3.2 million daily players a month after its release, and the average player is sitting down for three-hour sessions with the game, Bungie noted in its latest weekly update.

Bungie also said Destiny's online population over the past three weeks is greater than both Halo 3 and Halo: Reach's online players within the same spans, combined. Of course, there's a catch: Destiny is played entirely online, where the two Halos cited had offline campaigns.

"Pioneering something new is never easy," wrote community manager David Dague. "When we see the raw numbers, it's easy for us to say that the destination was worth the journey."

When it was offered this summer on all four consoles, Destiny's beta was played by 4.6 million people.

Elsewhere in the update, Dague spoke with designer Derek Carroll about the Iron Banner multiplayer event that's underway and running until Wednesday. Players have complained that the mode unfairly reduces power of higher level characters while overrating very low level characters, in the name of accessibility and balance.

"The way we pitched Iron Banner did make it sound like a 'no-holds-barred' playlist," Carroll said. "In reality, we delivered what we felt would be a competitive experience for everyone, not just players at the level cap. The reaction from players seems to be: 'No, we want it to be bad for lower-level players. That's the point!' We're listening to that feedback, but this first Iron Banner is fairly conservative."
