Minnesota Juniors score three in the third to foil TW

One minute into the third period, Nicole Unsworth scored a short-handed goal to give Team Wisconsin a seemingly comfortable 5-2 lead over the Minnesota Juniors Saturday morning at Braemar Ice Arena.

A reporter and a parent looked at each other and smiled, as if to say 'that's more like it.'

Not so fast.

Seventeen seconds later Minnesota tallied on the continued power play to make it 5-3.

Two minutes after that, Minnesota notched  their second shorty of the game to make it 5-4.

They would eventually score the game-tying goal with 1:15 left to send TW numbly to the handshake line, earning a single point instead of two for a victory in a 5-5 final.

After only seeing one goal in the first period, the teams combined for five in the second and four in the third for a wild finish between two quality teams.

Maggie Plaza scored with 1:45 left in the first to make it 1-0 in favor of TW. She grabbed a drop pass from Unsworth and beat MN goalie Anna Goldstein high blocker from the low left circle. McKenna Ellena also had an assist.

Shots were 11-10, MN Juniors.

The Gopher State Girls tied the game just 30 seconds into the middle period on a goal by Paige Beebe from the bottom of the right circle.

A few minutes later, TW had some great looks in close, but Goldstein made two stellar pad saves to keep the score at 1-1.

In the middle of the period, it took TW only nine seconds to increase the lead to two goals.

First, Amber Heidenreich scored from the left circle and then Plaza punched in a loose puck that the MN goalie failed to secure for a 3-1 lead.

With just under four minutes left in the stanza, Emma Peterson went bar-down from the right point to make it 4-1 and give TW some well-needed breathing room.

That only lasted two minutes, as Madison Nolan grabbed a loose puck in the NZ and went five-hole from the slot past TW goalie Lauren Tremblay to cut the margin to 4-2.

TW held a 20-11 shot edge in the period.

Unsworth scored her goal early in the third and then things went south shortly after that.

Emily Brown scored a PP goal to make it 5-3 on a shot that ticked off Tremblay's glove hand and past her for the score.

Two minutes later came another shorty, this courtesy of Jessica Bird to make it 5-4.

TW had a couple power play chances but couldn't score in the middle of the period, but they did kill off a penalty of their own to make up for it.

And the dagger came with 1:15 left as Nolan knocked in a rebound, letting all the air out of TW's sails as they saw a win turn into a tie.

Shots were 21-10 in favor of MN in the final period.

Tremblay stopped 31 shots for TW, while Goldstein (23) and Morgan Cin (12) combined for 35 for MN Juniors.

Unofficially, Ellena had two assists, while Morgan Zirbel, Unsworth, and Samantha Young each had one.

Team Wisconsin will take on the Minnesota Senior team at 5:50pm tonight as they finish pool play.
