Homeowners living across the road from a 30ft wall of garbage have urged authorities to take action at the site.

The Birch Skip Hire site, off Ashton Old Road in Beswick, remains more than double its permitted height despite two enforcement notices being issued by Environment Agency in the last year.

The heap of waste is currently more than eight metres high against a permitted limit of three metres.

A smaller neighbouring site run by the waste recycling company has also been measured at four metres high - twice as tall as its permitted limit.

The Environment Agency says it is currently considering further enforcement measures at the Rondin Road sites.

Chris Bamber, who lives on new-build The Way estate opposite the site, is among a group of residents campaigning to have the wall of waste reduced to its legal limits.

He said: “It’s an eyesore for residents living nearby and the simple fact is that this pile of waste has been above its permitted levels for more than a year and nothing has been done.

“It also causes problems for us in terms of pollution and dust and isn’t something we should be forced to live alongside.

Ward councillor Rosa Battle said: “It is an absolute disgrace that things have been allowed to get to this point and it is unfair that residents living in the area should have to put up with this.

“I fully support the residents in their campaign and will be continuing to urge the Environment Agency to take the action needed to finally get this problem sorted.”

The sites are both owned by Network Rail and the Environment Agency is responsible for enforcing waste management rules.

Previous enforcement notices - which the agency says have been ignored - were served in August and November last year. Fears have also been raised over the safety of the site in the event of a fire.

Simon Crozier, environment officer for the Environment Agency, said: “We have identified these two sites as high priority issues and is working closely with the landowner, permit holder, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and local authority, to significantly reduce waste levels on both sites.

“We are also considering options for further enforcement action against Birch Skip Hire Ltd.”

Birch Skip Hire Ltd could not be reached for comment.
