On your wedding day, every bride knows it’s pretty important to be in good shape — not only because it’s great to feel beautiful and svelte in your dress and in pictures, but also because the night following the wedding + honeymoon you want to be in tip top shape…if you know what I’m sayin’. That’s where my trainer, Kristin, of Iron Plate Studios comes into play.

A real-life Hoboken bride {and her guns!}

Working out twice weekly at Iron Plate Studios, I have run into a ton of brides who are doing private training sessions to get ready for their big day. It’s so inspirational to see them week after week, working hard, eating clean, and showing determination as dress fittings fly by {and the dresses get taken in, slowly but surely}.

Being that I’m an upcoming bride {next year}, I knew I had to get {a little more} serious about working out at some point soon {not really to lose weight, just to tone up}. Confession: I HATE CARDIO. Like, haaaate. It might be because I have a heart condition and don’t do well running long distances, or it’s just the fact that it’s borrrrring. I knew that had to change that mindset a bit as wearing a dress in a ton of photos gets nearer. So Kristin and I have started to work together a little more intensely {think: diet plan, workout schedule, etc} to get these coveted “wedding arms,” and she’s going to share a few tips on how to be a Fit Bride today:

Top 3 Tips to Transform into a Bridal Bombshell

1) Lift Heavy, Train Hard.

One of the mottos at IronPlate is lift heavy and hard.  No pink dumbbells here {although they are adorbs}.  Unless you’re the exception and not the rule, most women have a tough time “toning up” —and unless you really challenge yourself, the muscles won’t pop.  And remember, most of your dresses only show your shoulders and backs, so you’ll need to work extra hard in those specific areas, too.

Some favorite IronPlate exercises for an open back wedding dress:
    • – Pull ups
    • – Clean and Press
    • – Lateral Delt Raise and Rear Delt Flyes
    • – Rows, Rows, Rows
    • – Tricep Dips

2) Eat Clean.

The second motto at IronPlate is: unless you eat clean, you’re never going to see the muscles.  Make the most of your training and eat clean so we can see your hard work walk down the aisle!

Some favorite IronPlate clean foods:
  • – Lean proteins such as chicken, fish and other seafood and other protein-rich foods such as eggs and fat-free greek yogurt
  • – Whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice, yams and oatmeal
  • – Fibrous vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, leafy greens, cauliflower and kale

3) Cardio!

Add in much-needed cardio training if you’re looking to drop a considerable amount of weight.  It will help burn that extras fat and calories and lean you out getting you the look you want for your big day.  And walking doesn’t count.  We are talking about good ol’ fashioned, running, skipping rope, or something of the like.  Try HIIT {high intensity interval training}, or some of the awesome classes Hoboken has to offer and make it burn!

Advice from real life #Hoboken brides about training for your wedding:

Danielle R, IronPlate Bride 2014: Keep training, and find someone that motivates you.

Look at those guns!

I am not the typical girl that loves to work out everyday, but I was determined to look good for my wedding.  It is so important to find someone who motivates you when you’re losing your steam. Even after my wedding, I am still training! It’s so important to keep up with your workouts — it’s unreal how much you can change and maintain your body with some dedication. I mostly focused on my upper body, and I saw great results from doing a combination of lateral raises and upright rows as well as tricep extensions.

Coral D., IronPlate Bride 2013: Customize your workouts to keep challenging your body.

I started working at IronPlate Studios with a mere 2.5 months to get trimmed and toned up for my March 2013 wedding. I trained twice weekly, and we tailored a diet plan which would help me attain maximum results in our short timeframe. I ended up dropping ~20lbs and losing 9 inches across my waist/arms/thighs. It is so important to customize your workouts to keep challenging and changing your body each week.

Jeannine S., IronPlate Bride 2014: Incorporate clean eating into every day life.

Jeannine on her wedding day! Check out those guns 😉

I started training in November 2013 for my wedding on March 29, 2014 – 2 strength sessions with Kristin a week and 3 days of cardio and/or light weight work in between. My goal was obviously to look good in my tight fitting mermaid dress, but I really wanted to focus on toning my upper body. My biggest hurdle was how to incorporate clean eating into my everyday life– and we constructed a diet plan to suite my lifestyle, which is very important. My go-to foods were protein shakes (as snacks) and egg white veggie omelettes (for breakfast or dinner). I favored low carb meals, and gave up all alcohol. Going heavier with weights and doing less reps [repetitions] also really made a huge difference in my upper body.  It’s so important to change up your routine and shock your body which will help you drop pounds and gain muscle.
