Passengers raise £3,000 to erect memorial for bus stop cat

This article is more than 8 years old

Missy, described as ‘the most trusting cat’, found by owner with fractured skull and broken jaw in Havant, Hampshire

More than £3,000 has been raised to pay for a memorial for a bus stop cat that had to be put down after it was found with severe injuries.

The 13-year-old ginger cat, called Missy, was discovered by its owner, Richard McCormick, with a fractured skull, broken jaw and its teeth knocked out, which may have been caused by an attack or a road accident.

Those who regularly encountered Missy at the No 39 stop in Dunsbury Way in Havant, Hampshire, have donated money towards a plaque via a Just Giving fundraising page. Flowers, photos, children’s drawings and messages have also been left at the bus stop.

After paying for the plaque, the organiser of the appeal, Craig Cockram, plans to give the remaining money to an animal charity.

He wrote on the fundraising page: “We would like to raise as much money as possible for a plaque and the remaining monies going to charity for the 39 bus stop cat. This poor cat which was loved by many who just sat on a seat on the 39 stop in Dunsbury Way Leigh Park. Loved to be stroked and have the attention it was the most trusting cat. For a few years it would just come along and sit and wait.”

Peter Griffin posted on the page: “Breaks my heart to know that someone or thing could do that to this beautiful cat. RIP little missy and thank you for all the joy you brought to people over the years.”
