Charity drive Extra Life 2014 raises 'about $5.4M' and counting (update)

Extra Life, the annual video game livestream marathon for charity, has raised "about $5.4 million" so far this year for Children's Miracle Network hospitals, Extra Life announced today.

The organization said yesterday that participants in Extra Life 2014 pulled in $5,102,500.90 by the end of "game day," which ran from 8 a.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 25, to 8 a.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 26. According to Extra Life, that total easily topped the organization's entire fundraising efforts for 2013 — in fact, Extra Life 2014 had hit the $4.2 million mark, surpassing the 2013 total, with about nine hours left in the marathon.

The 2014 figure of $5.4 million represents a new record high for Extra Life. Last year, the fundraising drive brought in more than $3.7 million, which was a record at the time, despite distributed denial-of-service attacks that sought to derail the event and prevent people from donating to the cause. Extra Life will continue to tally donations for 2014 through Dec. 31. Top teams this year, as of press time, include KBMOD and the Internet Famous ($247,669), Rooster Teeth ($244,364) and Giant Bomb ($191,533).
