MLG Building Gaming Arena In China

by Joe Juba on Apr 24, 2014 at 01:02 PM

Most of the biggest gaming events in the world – like E3, Gamescom, and TGS – have to rent out convention halls. However, eSports is just about to outdo them all with its own dedicated arena in China.

MLG’s gaming arena is a permanent fixture dedicated to eSports, and intended be used for competition all year – not just during a few key events. According to an MLG press release, the arena is “in the ‘V-Zone,’ the first-in-the-world video game destination planned as a centerpiece of Lai Fung’s Renminbi 18 billion ‘Creative Culture City’ development on Hengqin Island.

The release also states that China is the world’s fastest growing eSports market, so the placement of MLG’s arena seems carefully considered. The arena is being built to house competitions for live audiences and those watching online. The facility is planned to open in 2017.

So, if you visit Hengqin Island in three years, be sure to stop by and check it out.

Our Take
The presence of (and interest in) eSports in North America has always been a bit smaller in North America compared to overseas, but this is a clear step forward for the growing industry. Online viewership is growing, and a dedicated physical space could pave the way for even more exposure. It might be a long time before we see an eSports arena in America, though; you can barely get us to watch soccer.
