Whether you love it or hate it, if you are in a relationship you cannot avoid Valentine’s Day. You can, however, decide how you will celebrate it. Just because it is expected that you should celebrate this occasion, does not have to mean that you break the bank doing so. There are actually a lot of things that you can do without spending too much, and–whisper it–maybe even have a good time. For any of the following dates, all you need is a car (and in one case not even that). Here are some great car-themed Valentine’s Day date ideas.

a picnic

If you live in a colder climate, it is probably too cold to have a picnic outside right now. A good alternative could be to drive somewhere with a good view, bring some food, some hot chocolate, and a blanket, and sit in your car. If you have a truck, you can even have the picnic in the bed of the truck, maybe bringing some extra cushions and blankets for warmth. If it is a clear night, you could just bring a couple of blankets, some hot chocolate, and go stargazing.

take a drive

If this is a new relationship, a drive is one of the best ways to get to know each other. It is not as formal as a dinner, you don’t have to maintain eye contact, and the pressure is off. If you have been in a relationship for awhile, it can be a fun way to spend time together, without spending money. Choose a scenic location and explore. The best part is that it does not matter where you go, all that matters is that you have a full tank of gas!

or, a road trip

Valentine’s Day falls on a long weekend this year, which means it is the perfect opportunity to take a road trip. Even if you think Valentine’s Day is the worst holiday of the year, you can make it fun with a road trip to somewhere different.

movie night

Forget the soppy movies and the romantic comedies, compile a list of your favorite movie car chases, and watch all of them in a car movie marathon.

progressive dinner

For a new spin on the traditional Valentine’s Day dinner, try a progressive dinner. Go to one restaurant for a starter, followed by your favorite place to eat a main course, and then somewhere else for the best dessert in town. This also gives you and your date more of a chance to talk without food in your mouths, while traveling from one location to the next.
