Why don't you tell us something unexpected about yourself Keith!

I was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy before becoming an enlisted member of that same service nearly 10 years later.

What kind of books do you write?

Well-researched historical fiction set in the 19th century in the United States. Also non-fiction, specifically self-help.

Who or what inspired you to write?

Inspiration to share stories has come from other authors: Mark Twain, Michael Crichton, Kenneth Roberts, J.R.R.Tolkien, Charles Dickens and many others.

What makes your writing stand out from the crowd?

The characters in my novels have the depth of real persons with real-life issues and events. Many become beloved friends of those who read them.

What is the hardest part of writing – for you?

Formatting for publication is always challenging. Research into historical matters is always ongoing, with new revelations adding to the facets of stories – even as they're being written.

Where do you like to write, and what is your routine (if you have one)?

I usually write in my basement office – call it a man-cave, everyone else does. Other than our two cats, there are few interruptions here.

What do you do when you are not writing – do you have a day job?

I retired from the conventional workforce.

Do you work with an outline or just write?

A Table of Contents usually performs as my outline.

What advice would you have for other writers?

Start your writing career AT LEAST 5 years before you plan to write, and begin by writing 1,000 words your first day. Then simply write 2,000 words every day after that and, by the end of the first 6 months, you'll be well on your way to the starting line.

How important is marketing and social media for you?

While writing is an important expression and outlet for creativity and the desire to share and teach, without the marketing aspect, few will ever get the opportunity to read my work.

What's your next step?

Finish the Longshot series of novels.
