Treat yourself to this easy, juicy, flavorful Potato Chip Chicken that’s baked and ready in 30 minutes!

Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chip Chicken - This easy, baked chicken recipe gives you juicy chicken breasts with a crispy, flavorful coating!

We don’t buy flavored chips or soda in our house very often. Every once in a while we get some Hansen’s Diet Root Beer, and the kids think it’s such a treat! When we decide to treat ourselves to real live potato chips, the boys could down a whole bag in one sitting if I let them. On our trip to Disneyland, I bought a bag of Doritos for the car trip on the way down. (Road trips make me want to eat junk food.)

We had a few deliciously orange chips here and there on the drive down and back, and we still had half a bag left when we got home. That bag of chips stayed in the top of the pantry for another few months, and I would sneak a few every now and then until I finally tossed the bag of remaining crumbs. Chips are like snack gold in our house!

My oldest’s eyes lit up when he saw me pull the bag of sour cream and onion potato chips out of the grocery bag for this recipe. “You got CHIPS!?” He was thrilled to eat a few for a snack. The next day I served him this potato chip chicken. Once he put two and two together that the chips were on the chicken, his reaction was, “What a waste of chips!” I thought he would be thrilled to have potato chips coating his chicken because, I mean, who wouldn’t be thrilled about that?

Turns out, he would have preferred to have a piece of plain chicken served with a pile of chips on the side. I’m going to assume that you are like me and are excited about crispy chips encrusting your baked chicken breast. You should be excited because this chicken is GOOD and really easy. I’m not going to lie. There are a lot of chips used here, like two servings per chicken breast.

There’s no other oil or fat used in the recipe though, and it’s baked, so let’s just say it’s not that bad for you. We all need chips in our lives sometimes. Why not treat yourself to a diet soda with your potato chip chicken, and you’ll feel like you’re in dinner paradise.

Potato Chip Chicken Recipe with Sour Cream and Onion

These easy baked chicken breasts are perfect for a quick, delicious dinner!

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Place a wire rack on a baking sheet, and spray with cooking spray.
  2. In a wide bowl, stir egg and yogurt together with a fork until smooth. In another wide bowl, crush about half the bag of potato chips into large crumbs.
  3. Dredge each chicken breast in yogurt mixture to coat both sides, and allow excess to drip off. Press coated chicken into the crushed chips to coat both sides. Place chicken on prepared wire rack, spacing pieces to not touch each other. (You may need to add more crushed chips to coat all the chicken, but no sense crushing the whole bag and wasting them if you don’t need them all!)
  4. Bake chicken in preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and internal temperature has reached 165 degrees F.

This recipe has been on my meal plan for a few weeks……..for the life of me, I can’t find a sour cream and onion KETTLE chip to save my soul. I have tried wal mart, target, pick n save……I’m about ready to remove this recipe completely. Where are yall finding kettle chips in this flavor?

Hi, Linda. I’m so sorry you have been running around town to look for these chips! I wish you had asked me sooner! You could definitely just make it with plain kettle chips or a different flavor like salt and vinegar. If you do, I would just recommend adding more seasoning to the yogurt mixture. A teaspoon of Ranch seasoning mix or seasoned salt should work. I hope you like it!

This was VERY bland. If I were to make it again I’d definitely season the chicken first. You’d think the chips would add enough flavor but they don’t. Also, I usually tent chicken with foil after coking for about 10 minutes so it stays juicier. This was a mistake with this recipe because it made the chip coating mushy. I wanted to like this recipe but just can’t.

I’m sorry this didn’t suit your tastes, Jane. I hope you might try another of my recipes to see if you like it better. Take care.

That pop-up on the right of your page that won’t go away is a real turn-off. I’ll pin this recipe, but won’t look for more because the pop-up is in the way. VERY annoying!
PS – You’re not the only food blogger who’s gone with this. Please stop. I like your blog…..I think……but I can’t tell because that pop-up is in the way!

Hi, Heather. Thanks for the feedback. Are you talking about the “Recommended Pinner” window that shows up in the bottom right? You should be able to click “x” in the corner to close it. As far as looking for more recipes goes, that window only shows up when you get to my site from Pinterest and disappears if you go to any other page. You are seeing it on a lot of blogs because we are using a service that allows us to schedule pins and share each other’s content, and that little window is part of their service. I’m sorry to hear that you find it annoying, and it is helpful for me to know if readers don’t like it.

Andi, you are too funny! That is exactly how it is at our house… gone in seconds flat. Because my kids think it’s a treat to have the junk food! (Plus I’m the same way when it comes to road trips and junk food… goes hand in hand, right?!)
Loving how you did this chicken recipe with my most favorite flavored chips! The texture looks divine, pinning!

Thank you, Gloria! I need to go on another road trip soon so I have an excuse to buy more Doritos ;)

Ha! Thats what we do, we load up on junk for car trips then I make them all quit cold turkey! I know my kids would love this chicken!!

This chicken will give you an excuse to buy chips even when you are staying home. Speaking of trips, I hope yours was a good one! xo

Haha! I think my kids would think I’d lost my marbles if I served chips on the chicken! We don’t really ever have chips or pop either – really only ginger ale (in case someone has an upset tummy)! My kids are the ones that get platefuls of chips at picnics … cause they sure aren’t getting it at home! Lol!
But seriously, this looks so good (and I do love sour cream and onion!) I may just need to break down and get some chips!

I hope you treat yourself (and your kids) to some chips for this one, Gretchen. If not, I bet you could come up with a healthier version with a different crunchy coating instead of potato chips!

I made the sour cream and onion chicken and after about 5 minutes in the oven the chips started burning.

I’m sorry that happened for you, Summer. I have baked with potato chips lots of times, this way or on top of casseroles, with good results. If you want to try again, maybe try thicker chips like kettle chips?
