Peter Murphy is a singer and songwriter hailing from Northampton, England who was born on July 11th, 1957. Best known for his work in the iconic rock band Bauhaus, he began a solo career in 1985 and has since released ten studio albums.
Born in Northampton and raised in Wellingborough, England, Peter Murphy essentially created what we know today as Goth music and culture thanks to the band that he formed with his school friend Daniel Ash, Bauhaus. Like many iconic and influential bands, Bauhaus flared brightly but briefly, forming in 1978 and splitting in 1983 after drawing one of the most devoted cult followings in rock music at the time. Initially, Murphy formed the band Dalis Car with Mick Karn, the bass player from the South London new wave band Japan, and while they recorded and released one album, Murphy decided that a solo career in earnest was the way to go. His debut album “Should The World Fall Apart” saw him team up with everyone from Public Image Ltd.'s John McGeoch to Bauhaus' own Daniel Ash, but it wasn't until the release of his 1989 third album “Deep” where he began to experience genuine commercial success, mainly in the USA.
The album itself charted strongly on the Billboard 200, but the album's singles were huge hits on the Modern Rock chart, with “Cuts You Up” peaking at number one and staying there for seven weeks, longer than any other single in history until R.E.M came along with “Losing My Religion”. Ever since then, Murphy has remained one of the most influential post-punk artists of all time, with everyone from Elliot Smith and The Dresden Dolls to Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails citing him and his work as a formative influence on them. He's even had an effect on the world of literature, with noted authors Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore singing his praises over the years. He records and performs live to this very day, and as an artist whose influence is still all over modern culture whether it knows it or not, Peter Murphy comes highly recommended.
Read moreThe atmosphere was absolutely electric as we all waited in anticipation for Peter Murphy to walk on stage with Bauhaus. The support act got us in the mood nicely, and hearing a rocky bass start to pump, and the lights dim, let us know that Murphy wasn’t long away. There were fans from all stages of his career there, from the band’s early days, through to his most recent solo material, and gothic rock fans, so it was a great atmosphere, with so many long following fans.
As he walked on stage, everyone was screaming and going crazy, and it was great to see that he’s only slightly adapted his goth look with his age, and he still looks cool as ever! The Mr. Moonlight tour had been heavily anticipated, and it was great to see the arena packed, as the Bauhaus fans gathered. Although it was mainly band material that they played, Murphy managed to squeeze in a couple of solos from Ninth, which went down incredibly well with everyone watching.
The energy from everyone on the stage, especially Murphy, was just out of this world, and they didn’t seem to stop to take a breath for the entire 2 hour set. Murphy’s abilities (and the rest of the band members) on their instruments was incredible, and seeing the perform live gives you an insight to the talent that sometimes goes unnoticed.
Peter Murphy performed live at the Outerspace Ballroom last night and he was phenomenal. A divine voice from an elegant and charming rascal. He teased and chatted with the crowd. Three fans were nuzzled. I saw lots of swooning. The packed room was absolutely spellbound by Peter, who seems to delight in the lights and performing. He played with two fine musicians, there were grinding noise pieces and velvety songscapes, and of course the the spooky dark melodies we love. Such an incredible show!!!
Peter’s voice was great. David J looked cool as ever. Drummer was very energetic. They did not play Dark Entries, which I’m pretty sure they were supposed to. Overall, song selection was good. I thought the show would be a little more theatrical. Guess it’s not the late 90s anymore. Crowd was mostly 50 somethings. Really wish Daniel Ash has been there. They had a solo artist open who played piano and was hilarious. The crowd really loved him. He probably stole the show.
The Ruby Celebration show was incredible. I was expecting it to be weird - Peter Murphy and David J performing 40-year-old Bauhaus songs seemed like more of a novelty act cashing in on people's nostalgia - but it turned out to be a truly great show. Peter Murphy performed like his life depended on it - there were even props! - and the music was powerful and moving. (I just wish there weren't so many fans who felt like they had to film the entire show on their phones.)
Show was cancelled last minute, due to the performers voice problem. Was contacted by the venue that we would be allowed to attend both performances , and we could arrive 2 hours earlier than planned. Wee took advantage of this opportunity, as we live 40 miles away. After an hour waiting at the venue, we were told that the 1st show would be cancelled, and the artist would try to perform in 2 hours. We didn’t want to wait that long with no guarantee
Disappointed to say the least.
After waiting soo long to hear this man live, I should not have bothered.
The sound was awful, you could hear the guitars and drums but Mr Murphy could only be heard when he shouted.
In the interludes when the band was not playing it was hard to hear his speaking voice.
Where was I stood, directly in front of the mixing desk.
Sorry to say but this was the worst of the 3 gigs i attended over 4 days.
I am glad I went...it is what I planned a trip to NYC around. BUT, he had a cold and his microphone did not work through much of the show, so he couldn't be heard, and would not talk into the microphone between songs, so his banter with the audience could not be heard...despite numerous people in the audience asking him to turn up.the mic/ talk into the mic
I am glad I went, but it could have been better
Great show. Too bad the audience was a bunch of asshats. Whole crowd was rude yelling at Peter to turn up his mic, and talking during his set. Maybe there were some technical difficulties, but I was mortified that everyone was shouting at him. I was afraid he was going to leave, but he didn't. He was a true performer and gave it his all. Much love and thanks to Peter Murphy, a true legend.
The show was the best I have ever seen at the Granada, both for Peter Murphy and otherwise. It was jam-packed and the atmosphere was festive and the performance was riveting. Loved to see Peter again and loved seeing David J. The musicianship was dead on and Peter still has his chops. Bauhaus will live on in our hearts and minds forever even if Bela Lugosi is dead.
Seeing Peter Murphy was having a poem right before my eyes. Filling up the space with his deep, beautiful voice, expressing himself with his soul and body, accompanied by great musicians to complement every song, and having a gentle touch his his fans was an unforgettable experience!
I love him even more after the show!
Thank you Peter Murphy <3
