FRANKENSTEIN IN A NEW ADAPTATION BY LINDEL HART commissioned by Old Deerfield Productions.
Frankenstein is a new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel, written and performed by Lindel Hart as the Creature, Colin Allen playing the roles of Victor Frankenstein, Mr. DeLacey, and William, and with Jane Williams playing Mary Shelley and Elizabeth.
The commission for Frankenstein was chosen in response to where we are with regard to the second Industrial Revolution. This play was commissioned mindfully and specifically to ask questions to address the crises that are so beautifully framed in Mary Shelley's novel: what happens when science and ambition run amok, what is the cost of ego and power taking over our humanity, can we alleviate the suffering created by embracing what we can do rather than what we should do. Without providing answers but by illustrating the affliction caused by not questioning, Frankenstein is a shocking cautionary tale. Through her story and the active intention of the performers and creators we imagine how our local and global communities can move past the accepted norms of commoditization to form the new collaborative model of connection and communication. It is clear that we need this model to drive us into the next evolution of civilization where technology will help and not hurt, people may collaborate and not compete, and resources are replenished rather than ravaged. History, literature, and art provide a direct channel to the head and heart to help affect this crucial shift.
The production will feature projection design by Florian Canga illustrating the story through light and image that will also draw parallels to our troubled present. Handheld video cameras and video installation manipulated by the character Mary Shelley.
Makeup design and photos by Joseph Dulude II. Set and costumes by Athan Vennell. Lights by Matt Cowan. Poster design by Sloan Tomlinson.
Sponsored by Mass Humanities.
