Lower Paxton Township supervisors hear plans for Linglestown's 250th anniversary celebration

Dozens of events are in the works to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Village of Linglestown next year.

Traffic circles one of two roundabouts in the Village of Linglestown, which marks its 250th anniversary in 2015.

Polly Murphy, a key organizer of the village’s sestercenntenial celebration, spoke to Lower Paxton Township supervisors Tuesday about activities planned throughout 2015 and culminating with a weekend bash Oct. 9 to 11, 2015.

Civic groups, Scouts, churches, historians, cooks, needle workers, businesses, re-enactors and school children are among the participating groups, Murphy said.

Tentative plans for the year-long celebration include:

All the village’s churches will ring their bells to kick off the big weekend of October 9-11. Events planned for that weekend include:

For October 17, 2015 -- the Saturday following the big weekend -- American Legion Post 272 is planning a parade.

Linglestown’s founder, Thomas Lingle, laid out the original 80 plots on his land in 1765 and named it the Town of St. Thomas, but the name never stuck. Lingle died in 1811 and the residents continued to refer to their community as Linglestown.

The village is older than Lower Paxton Township, where it is located. The township celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2017.

A blog with monthly entries on the history of Linglestown was started in 2013 to spark interest in the anniversary.
