Screening company disappears, slowing pre-employment process

Maryland fingerprinting company Worldwide Management was hired to provide criminal background checks and fingerprinting services as part of the pre-employment process. The company then vanished from its mall location, leaving those who had paid for screening services in the lurch. In addition, Worldwide Management owed the state of Maryland more than $300,000 for collections and processing fees. Because so many employers depend on corporate screening services during the pre-employment process, you need to be careful about the screening companies with whom you choose to work. Do your homework before hiring just any service. Look for service records When researching a background screening company, look to see how long it has been in business and who its satisfied clients are. If you can’t find a listing of how many years of service a company has provided, you can get a good idea by looking at their credentials and how long they have been certified by governing bodies. Look for certifications Anyone can say they can provide pre-employment screening services, but in order to be certified by agencies such as the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS) — or to be a member of certain professional associations — a company is required to do more than just talk the talk. Before you choose a screening company, look on its website to see listings of credentials. You can also double check with the certifying agencies to ensure the company is actually a member of each agency or organization they claim, if something seems fishy.
