Introduction

This page is a resource for UC Santa Barbara graduate students. It provides a compressed (and hopefully up to date) list of all fellowships available. NOTE: Doctoral 2A, or P3 class level students are ineligible for central fellowship funds.


UC Santa Barbara Fellowships


Dean's Fellowship

Award: This award provides a $7,500 stipend plus payment of in-state tuition and university health insurance for one quarter. Please note, supplemental nonresident tuition will not be provided. This award provides one quarter of support for a continuing graduate student. The Dean's Fellowship is available to both domestic and international students. It is particularly appropriate for support in the second, third, fourth or fifth year of graduate study.

Eligible nominees must be:
* Enrolled in a doctoral or M.F.A. program, or in an M.A. program in a department for which the Masters degree is the terminal degree offered
* Demonstrate high academic performance and are in good academic standing.
* Have requisite Spring 2014 registration or Spring 2014 official Leave Of Absence status at the time of nomination
* Be within time-to-degree and normative time standards

Students are not eligible if:
* They have P3 status
* Hold an active multi-year central fellowship package (e.g. students in a departmental appointment year of a multi-year award) during the funding quarter
* Received the Dean's Fellowship twice previously during the student's academic career at UCSB

Broida-Hirschfelder Fellowships

Given by: Faculty Women's Club of UCSB
Award Amount: $8000 stipend
Eligibility:
 Domestic/international, male/female, must be either registered, preference will be given to those who have advanced to candidacy.
 Must be registered in Fall of fellowship year
 Must be in academic good standing at the time of application
 Must be within time-to-degree or normative time standards
 Must have completed at least two years of graduate studies in his/her current Ph.D. program

Application form. Personal narrative (2pgs), Indicate any unusual or difficult circumstances faced by the candidate during grad studies. Other materials: Cover sheet, 2 page summary of research, letter of recommendation from advisor, and a CV.


Brython Davis Graduate Fellowship

Award Amount: $7500 stipend
Eligibility: For Children of members of US Navy or Marine Corps.

The Brython Davis Endowment Graduate Fellowship is designated for children of regular members of the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps. It provides one-quarter of fellowship support for a continuing graduate student. This award provides a $7,500 stipend plus payment of in-state tuition and health insurance (UCSHIP) for one quarter. Please note, nonresident supplemental tuition will not be provided. Awards may be received more than once.

To be eligible, applicants:
* Must be the child of one or more parents who has served as a regular (not reservist) member Marine Corps
* Must be registered or on approved Leave of Absence during Spring 2014
* May not hold an active multi-year central fellowship package (e.g. students in a department multi-year award)
* Must be in academic good standing at the time of nomination

Graduate Student Association Childcare Grant


The GSA Childcare Grant for Graduate Students is intended to promote graduate student success during certain required milestone activities of the graduate program. Approved graduate students with single-child households will receive an award of $250; graduate students with more than one child will receive an award of $150 per child, with a maximum award of $600. Grants are limited to one award per graduate student household per quarter, with a maximum of five awards allowed during a student’s academic tenure at UCSB.

Eligibility: In order to qualify, you must be a registered graduate student, able to provide proof of dependents, be enrolled in a degree granting program, and be able to provide documentation that you are currently completing one of the following milestone activities:
* Completing comprehensive exams
* Completing area exams
* Preparing for a master’s thesis defense
* Preparing a dissertation proposal
* Preparing for a dissertation oral defense

Graduate Student Association Conference Travel Grant


The GSA Conference Travel Grant is intended to help offset the costs of travel or registration fees at professional conferences in which a graduate student is presenting original research findings. Eligible students will receive up to $200 in reimbursement for registration or travel costs related to conference travel. Travel grants are only available once per academic year.  Applications are due on or before the last day of the quarter following the quarter during which the student attended the conference.

Eligibility: Applicant must not yet be advanced to candidacy at the time of attendance, and must be accepted to present original research data.

UCSB Affiliates Graduate Dissertation Fellowships


Eligibility: doctoral students in final year of study. One fellowship is reserved for a qualified student in Engineering. Awards are made on the basis of the quality of the proposed topic and the candidate’s academic credentials. Awards will be decided by May of the current year.
Award: Stipend of $3000 matched by the graduate division

Academic Senate Doctoral Student Travel Grant


Grants are awarded to eligible students on a first-come, first-served basis each fiscal year. Application must be received at least 21 calendar days prior to travel. Applicants must be doctoral students and advanced to candidacy, or if master of fine arts (M.F.A.) students, must be in their second year and be in candidacy prior to travel.  Travel funding is available to attend a major professional conference at which the applicant will present a paper, present research, perform, or exhibit. Students may only receive one travel grant during the course of their studies.

Maximum funding is as follows:
* $350 California
* $685 All other U.S. locations, Mexico, Canada
* $1,030 Puerto Rico, Europe
* $1,200 Central or South America
* $1,400 Asia, Africa, Middle East, South Pacific

Student applications for travel funds must be accompanied by an abstract of the paper to be presented, a copy of the formal invitation, and a letter of support from the student's advisor indicating the importance of the forum. The conference must be an important one to the discipline; preference will be given to travel associated with potential academic employment. Funds are limited; applications are accepted year-round until funds are expended or until May 15, whichever occurs first.

Symantec Graduate Fellowship


Eligibility: graduate students working in systems research. Preference will be given to students with a desire to work in an industrial research lab and those working on innovative research projects in areas related to Symantec’s businesses such as security, storage, backup, virtualization, cloud computing, big data infrastructure, etc.  Recipients will also be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence and their academic progress to-date as evidenced by publications.

1 Year of support up to $20,000.

IBM Graduate Fellowships


Eligibility: Students must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member and enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program. The faculty member is encouraged to contact an IBM colleague prior to submitting the nomination to assure mutual interest. Outside of Europe and Russia, students must have completed at least one year of study in their doctoral program at the time of their nomination. Award Recipients will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their academic progress to-date, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head. Preference will be given to students who have had an IBM internship or have closely collaborated with technical or services people from IBM.

1 year stipend that varies by country. Can be renewed up to 3 years.

The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based masters or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study.
