Ride Along Over The Shoulder Of A USAC Silver Crown Driver As He Hauls Sideways Around A Dirt Oval During Race Practice

The formula for a USCA Silver Crown car is pretty simple if we break it down to the total root and that is essentially this. Take a sprint car chassis, install a NASCAR engine in it and go have fun storming the castle. There are an incredible array of intricacies, complexities, and nuances from there on out but for the purposes of this discussion, just know that you are looking at a car that has an engine making like 900hp with a total weight of 1,625lbs (minimum). If you have a fat ass driver or the guy chowed some donuts maybe you are at 1,700 but c’amon people, that is freaking awesome.

Of course, because these are wildly powerful cars on dirt they spend lots and lots of time sideways during a typical lap. As you will see here, driver Shane Cockrum starts out at a relatively conservative pace during his practice session but by the end he is really giving it the what for and he’s certainly steering the car for all that its worth, controlling the angle and pitch of his slide and applying steering and throttle at the precise time that it is needed to either balance the car or power out of a corner. Normally when we talk about any type of racing they thought process is that sideways “isn’t the fast way around”. That all goes completely out the window with these cars. If you tried to drive one of these like a stock car, you’d get passed like your junk was tied to a stump.

One thing that we always think about regarding these cars and drivers is how one of the skilled dirt track guys would do in the world of drifting. Granted, that is left AND right stuff but the control skills and feel are all there and ingrained in these drivers. It just seems like there would be some similarities that would translate. But back to this video. We loved it because of the sound, the sideways look, and the perspective that shows Shane really working it in the cockpit. Never does he seem out of control or fighting the car. The whole thing seems really smooth and natural, which is very cool to watch.

Chad keeps telling me he is going to sprint car school and after seeing this, I am jealous!
