When to Remove a Connection
Every single week I receive HUNDREDS of connection requests, some are personalized, most are generic, and I do accept a slew of them, however I also delete and remove many.
So WHO do I remove and WHY I recommend you do the same?
Get a Picture!
Simply put, by default I accept just about all connection requests from most LinkedIn members, however, if the profile doesn't have a picture, the odds of getting "approved" are MUCH slimmer.
The old adage encourages to not judge a book by the cover, well, I do and just about everyone else does. Billions are invested in design, research, for packaging and branding purposes. You and I decide which car, cloths, phone, or even toothbrush we will chose to acquire based on partly looks, because looks matter!
I'm not saying that LinkedIn is a catwalk or a meat market, but if we are to network and help each other, a picture in the profile goes a LONG way to help make a "connection approval" decision.
Your picture is your first “eye catcher”, if you have NO picture, the odds of getting a profile view are lower than if you had a nice professional picture with a SMILE!
- Do not use LOGOS
- Do not pick a picture that belongs to Facebook
- Do not pick a picture that looks like a mugshot or a drivers license picture, however NO PICTURE also raises suspicions...

Religious, Political or Flirtatious Agenda
Sometimes, I receive messages from connections that go into odd rambling about politics, religion or being soul mates this gets a connection removed right away.
I receive from time to time "flirtatious" messages, me, a guy getting "hit on" on LinkedIn, there is NO TELLING what kind of messages the women are receiving!
LinkedIn is NOT a catwalk, a dating site nor a meat market! However some members tend to forget that!
Anyhow, these are my reasons, my choices and my right.
- If you are convinced that the Lord sent you to save me via LinkedIn Private Messages, please remove yourself or I will.
- If your government wants to steal your 36.000.000 Dollars and you'd rather give them to me because I'm awesome, please remove yourself or I will.
- If you feel that LinkedIn may be a good place to pick up a date, and you need to reach out to me or others with some lame pick up lines (even great ones) you will be removed.
Spam or Random Non-Sense Messages
If you DO have picture but you are not really James Dean, AND you pitch me you will be removed! Now if you ARE The Real James Dean, then I will freak out and remove you anyway!
The Next BIG FAT NO-NO
If you send me some link to "rate" you or "join" you on some other """professional""" network that will save your life or boost my business, you will be removed also.
I believe Mybizcard.co is defunct now, but certainly others would like to creep into your network and syphon it out, beware and be safe!
As you can read above, I used to reply kindly with a nice and tactful message, but now I just remove.
Someone I probably wouldn't network "for real"
At some point, we ALL must allocate our time in a smart and efficient way. We all have only 24 hours per day, and each minute is precious.
So if I glance at your profile and for whatever reason I don't "feel" it, I simply will not connect or remove the connection.
We don't go to a networking event and start talking to ALL the people attending, we should be a bit more strategic in our approach, same goes on LinkedIn.
- Respect YOUR time by allocating time with the members you might have a mutual benefit.
- Respect YOUR connections time by not imposing yourself if you know you are not a fit.
Rude, Lewd and Obnoxious
There is NO excuse, in my book, to be rude, lewd or obnoxious in a professional environment. So if I see in my newsfeed or else where a connection displaying a measure of disrespect, in a post, a comment, an update, I just quietly remove them and make room for gents and ladies; simply put not bullies allowed!
Simply put, NO bullies allowed!
As I do this weekly clean up, I notice that the quality of my contacts improve, my newsfeed doesn't look like Facebook, and I get a much better ROIT -Return On Time Invested- on LinkedIn.

8yWell stated and well presented. Thank you Jerome! I concur completely.
Jerome, thank you for accepting the invitation. Also, while reading this very interesting article, I was smiling while thinking of all the times I've changed my profile picture on Linkedin. I really do love the feature of being able to change our profile pictures in Linkedin as it shows you are not being the same every day, that somehow we change in some aspects. I'm currious though... According to this article, you shouldn't have accepted the invitation. So, what happened? :-) Again, thanks both for sharing this article and for accepting the invitation.
