Antarctic ice shelf the size of London about to collapse

The world’s rising sea levels

An Antarctic ice shelf the size of Greater London is in the process of collapsing, scientists have said.

Researchers from Nasa said it was unlikely that the Larsen B Ice Shelf, which is half a kilometre deep at its thickest point, would last the decade.

The vast ice shelf on the tip of the Antarctic peninsula has already become emblematic of the dangers of warming in the region, after two thirds of it spectacularly broke off in 2002 over the course of six weeks. This left about 1,600 sq km of it still attached to the peninsula, while the rest floated off into the Southern Ocean and slowly melted over the next month.
