specializing in unique and playful kindergarten projects, HIBINOSEKKEI + youji no shiro has designed the OB kindergarten and nursery located in nagasaki, japan. the plot sits near the ocean with views of the surrounding mountainous landscape where this aspect has influenced the arrangement and strategy of the interior. playing and learning goes hand in hand at OB kindergarten where a variety of niches has been integrated into the space. the building itself has been raised up where the spacious cafeteria composing of an internal and external dining terrace, displays double height glazing which looks out onto surrounding scape while being sheltered by the overhang of the roof itself.

the monochromatic, box exterior is distinctive to normal kindergarten designs

an emphasis on creativity and movement is recurrent throughout the scheme. along with the elongated stairs, there is also a loft that can only be accessed by the children having to climb up the rope-made tunnel to be greeted with a rooftop terrace facing the ocean. altogether with the blackboard walls, house-shaped hideouts and the rooftop play area, it is a clear example on how design can be utilized to improve children’s physical strength, attentiveness and self learning.
