February 2014: Dramatic increase in professional services jobs

Bureau of Labor and Statistics — most industries held steady in their employment rates. Only a handful of industries saw great leaps in new jobs. Approximately 10.5 million people remain unemployed.
- In February, the number of people considered “long term” unemployed — those who have been unemployed for 27 consecutive weeks — increased by 203,000. The total number of long-term unemployed is 3.8 million; this number has trended downward over the past year.
- The professional and business services category saw great leaps, with 79,000 new jobs in accounting, bookkeeping and temporary help. This substantial increase in jobs may be due to the onset of tax season. Over the last 12 months, this industry saw an average monthly increase of 56,000 jobs.
- The food and beverage service industry also saw an increase, with 21,000 new jobs added. However, in the 12 months prior, this industry was seeing an average of 27,000 new jobs per month being added.
- Construction, wholesale trade and health care all saw slight increases in the number of available jobs, though no significant changes were noted.
- Many industries saw little to no change, including government, financial, retail trade, manufacturing and transportation.
- The only industry that saw any kind of significant hit was information, which lost 16,000 jobs in February, mostly within motion picture and sound recording businesses (less 14,000 jobs).
