Mold remediation costs Greenwich School District $19,000

GREENWICH — Following the closure of six classrooms at Stewartsville Middle School on Tuesday, Sept. 25, Greenwich School District paid ServPro $19,090 for mold remediation.

The Board of Education approved the contract with ServPro at its Sept. 25 meeting, signed the contract on Sept. 26 and, according to the meeting agenda, ServPro disinfected the rooms on Sept. 27.

The remediation process involved spraying Sporicidin, a disinfectant, that destroys "vegetative forms of harmful microorganisms," according to the ServPro contract.

It stated the spray doesn't kill or inactivate all groups or forms of microorganisms. The contract also suggested that the school do an assessment following the remediation.

The original assessment of mold in the room, including surface areas and air contamination tests, was conducted by R K Occupational & Environmental Analysis of Phillipsburg on Sept. 25.

Five of the six classrooms are now open, following a second mold test conducted on Monday, Sept. 30, according to Eppolite. One classroom remains closed, and was tested again today.

The school has not received a contract or written reports from R K Occupational & Environmental Analysis, and therefore a school board resolution has not been approved. Eppolite said she expects test results on Friday, Sept. 18.

The extent of the mold damage remains unknown, but Eppolite previously said the assessors reported that tests indicated "higher than acceptable levels."

Letters and emails were sent to faculty, staff and parents discussing the mold discovery and remediation, according to Eppolite.
