Meanwhile, in one of many alternate futures...
Out of the corner of her eye, Shawna sees a soldier.
He’s peering around the wall of the apartment block opposite. He holds the barrel of his E4 carbine standard-issue energy rifle close to his face.
Shawna screws her eyes tight shut. "Not again," she murmurs.
She opens them... and the man is gone.
"Emergency," she says—to nobody in particular. Her Lens flashes up "911," and connects her to Dispatch.
"What's your emergency?"
"Cybernetics."
She sits on the sidewalk, a volley of energy-fire sailing over her head.
She hopes EMTs can remove her Gaming Chip—before reality disappears completely.
