What’s to Love: From Nancy Drew to Veronica Mars, we really dig girl detectives! Hope Larson (A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel) and Brittney Williams (Patsy Walker, A.K.A Hellcat!) present the newest gal sleuth on the block with Goldie Vance, an exciting, whodunnit? adventure that mixes the fun of Eloise with the charm of Lumberjanes.
What It Is: In a timeless story, 16-year-old Marigold “Goldie” Vance lives at a Florida resort with her dad, who manages the place. Her mom, who divorced her dad years ago, works as a live mermaid at a club downtown. Goldie has an insatiable curiosity, which explains her dream to one day become the hotel’s in-house detective. When Walter, the current detective, encounters a case he can’t crack, he agrees to mentor Goldie in exchange for her help solving the mystery utilizing her smarts, random skills, and connections with the hotel staff and various folks in town.

The art and pacing are awesome in this. I like the set-up, though the main reason I held back on the star-rating is because I'm not as morally aligned with the characters. If I found out that my friend stole someone else's property to fund their self-esteem issues, I wouldn't be laughing and "oh you"-ing that person, and then instantly setting them up with my best gal pal. Further, I wouldn't be risking the property of further strangers to fix my friend's lame-ass mistakes. Actions equal consequences, and it feels as if there are none for the heroes because the creative team says so. I don't buy it. I'm not opposed to morally ambiguous characters, but the story mood/narration/genre always goes along with it. I'm interested to see if this develops or changes for future issues.

Got this for free and decided to try out the webcomic.
The art is very cute, but the first issue did not set up much besides showing us who Goldie Vance is and the place where most of the stories will be set (hotel resort).
It was enough to get me curious to read more since I can be a sucker for detective stories.
Goldie's one-half Nancy Drew and one-half Veronica Mars, if she existed as a biracial and LGBT kid in the sixties. The first of the series caught my attention. I love seeing a cast of characters of various hues, sexes, and sexuality.
The only con I have is how it's set in 1960s Florida and bypassing the issues of the era. Everyone's getting along as if they live in 2018. (Maybe I'll get this later in the series.)
Goldie Vance is a teenager who works at a Florida resort that her father manages. She dreams of becoming the hotel's in-house detective, and helps the current detective on cases.
A fun, retro teen sleuth story. Lots of diversity, and done in a low-key way... it's there, but not the focus of the story. Well done.
The first comic in the series. Goldie works the case of a hotel guest's missing necklace.
This is an awesome comic book serise! I've only read the first issue but I can already tell it's going to be great. I don't really know why but I love that it's set in 19! I really like the aritsts too who worked on it, too! (Hellcat was AMAZING!!!) I can't wait to read the others! Goldie is such a good main charecter, she's funny, smart, and realistic. Realistic charecters is something that a lot of comics don't do good on, I'm looking at you, Classic DC charecters!
Another amazing, intrepid detective! Nancy Drew may have some competition! Goldie Vance works with her family at a beautiful hotel in Florida. She splits her time valeting and working as an in-house detective at the Crossed Palms Resort. Goldie has an insatiable curiosity that may just get her into trouble. A theft and kidnapping befall a guest at the hotel and Goldie is on the case!
A solid graphic novel series that should appeal to Nancy Drew fans. Goldie is a biracial teen in Florida, working at a hotel with her father and out to solve crimes happening to guests. The book is a quick read; just a little longer than a regular comic book, with a fun setting and stock characters.
A new graphic novel to me. I enjoy this one because Goldie is 'part detective' and helps to solve the mysteries that are going on around her. I liked the graphics and I found this one interesting to read. You never quite know what Goldie is going to get into next.
Bought for my daughter aged 9, who said, “I liked the main character Goldie; she is so cool being a Detective. I found it easy to read but wished it was a longer comic! I’ll be reading volume 2.”
I love me a good girl detective story. Bright and cute with the 60s Florida setting and an entertaining cast of characters. I'm not sold on the mystery organization we meet, or Goldie's love interest, who feels too old. But it's over all an enjoyable, diverse read.
I really liked the art style of this. It's very well suited to the tone of the story. The story itself was so-so to me. It felt underdeveloped, and Goldie seemed to reach conclusions out of nowhere. Given how similar it felt to mystery parodies I've seen in various pop culture, though, I think it was aiming to be modeled after old, corny styles.
Meh. It's a series and I was good with just the one. Trying to put too many "diverse" themes into one book just makes me forget what the story line is actually about.
I'm almost surprised by how much I liked this. It was charming, the graphics were great, and I was left with many questions, as well as a need to know what happens next. It's a pity it's so short!
For a younger audience. It was fine very run of the mill the characters didn't really stick out and the story didn't interest me enough to want to continue to read the others.
