Twist and Wrap This Gumby-Like Action Cam to Get the Shot

The innovative GoPro-like Boud Flex Cam Pic can be tied to an ankle, a wrist, or a dog collar.

LAS VEGAS—Action cameras are getting smaller and smaller—just look at the GoPro's Hero4 Session ($286.47 at Amazon) , a box-sized action cam that's half the size of the GoPro Hero 4 but can still record in 1080p.

CES 2016 Bug Art The trend looks as if it will continue here at CES. But the Boud Flex Cam Pic is taking things one step further by eschewing the typical boxy form factor of other action cams for a Gumby-like body with the camera at the end of a long stick of flexible material. The body can wrap around virtually anything, such as a wrist, an ankle, a bicycle bar handle, or a dog's collar. You can even wrap it in a circle so that it stands on its own; the material is flexible and will stay where you put it.

Inside the Pic is an 8-megapixel camera that records footage in full HD, 1080p at 30 frames per second, a 480mAh battery for up to an hour of video recording, and 16GB of onboard memory. It's Bluetooth capable, so you can control it with the accompanying app for iPhone or Android, or you can transfer files seamlessly with a USB connection. The camera is splash proof, and is protected by HOYA 5 Glass.

Though it may seem difficult to control with such a simple form factor, a few taps of the button at the bottom of the flexible body will have you recording video in no time. To turn the Pic on, press the button for a few seconds; double tap the button to start video recording, single tap to snap a pic, and turn it off with another long hold. You can also start recording from afar with the app, which connects to the Pic via Bluetooth 4.0.

The Pic, which raised about $155,000 on Indiegogo last year, comes in many fun colors—apricot, blue, gray, pink, and white—as well as character models. Frank has a tuft of funny hair (think the Troll Dolls of yore), Bob has three eyes on top of the camera, and Jack has a pair of horns. More character models are coming soon.

Pricing is yet to be determined, but look for the Flex Cam Pic in the early spring.

Raised in the Midwest, Ben considers himself a generally nice guy. He went to NYU to study journalism and comparative literature, and went on to captain the NYU Fencing Team. Sabre, since you asked. He came to PCMag after a stint at Men's Fitness magazine, where he tried to get totally jacked. He didn't. But he did find some time to review plenty of fitness trackers, tablets, and other cool gadgets. Outside of the office, you can find him at the last seat at the bar, where he'll be commenting anonymously on an Indianapolis Colts blog.
