If you've been watching ITV2's Love Island this summer, the chances are you'll be addicted. If you haven't, and you are happy to commit seven hours of your week to watching the show (trust me, you'll be glad to devote the time) then you'd better start tuning in.

It was a particularly dramatic week at the Spanish villa this week, when two new boys Alex Bowen and James Khan were thrown into the mix, six-packs in tow. Fellow contestant Zara Holland, who isn't shy about the fact she was recently crowned Miss GB, took a shine to Alex, and invited him for a date overnight in 'The Hideaway' (essentially a shag pad with a heart-shaped bed and everything, like off The Sims).

In a move she's since labelled "out of character" numerous times, Zara ended up having sex with Alex, and although the majority of it took place under a blanket (made of fur, of course), the whole thing was still filmed by cameras in the villa and later aired on television.

Which is where we arrive at the issue. After being hounded by people about Zara's behaviour - apparently 'disrespecting herself' by publicly sleeping with a guy on the first date - Miss GB made the decision to strip the 20-year-old from Hull of her title.

The organisation explained in a statement on Twitter that "following recent actions within the ITV2 show 'Love Island', it is with deep regret" that they have decided to de-crown Zara. They added that this isn't a decision they've "taken lightly", but explained that "we pride ourselves on promoting the positivity of pageants in modern society and this includes the promotion of a strong, positive female role model in our winners."

In Zara's place, Deone Robertson from North Lanarkshire has now been crowned Miss GB for the remainder of the year.

But in response to the controversial decision, Miss GB has been hit back at by protestors who claim they are taking a very sexist stance on the issue. Why should a woman openly having sex be seen as something that's negative, when it almost certainly wouldn't be the same for men, people are arguing.

And even Love Island's presenter Caroline Flack has weighed in on the issue, telling Miss GB they sound like they're from the "dark ages":

People are so riled up about the issue, in fact, that a petition has been started to give Zara back her crown. The petition has called for Zara to be given a second chance, saying Miss GB have given "a harsh punishment stripping her of her title for a silly little mistake and for only being human."

Miss GB has retaliated to claims of sexism in a long statement you can read on their Facebook page. "We feel it important to explain that we have no problem at all with sex and our contestants/winners being sexually active and exploring their sexuality with another consensual adult," the statement begins.

"However we simply cannot condone a reigning title holder doing so on TV. To put it into context, for those outside of the pageant industry, if a school teacher took part in the show, that person would have a level of responsibility they would be expected to uphold because of their role, and are certain they would face similar consequences if they took part in similar actions on National television," the organisation argues.

It remains to be seen whether Miss GB will relent and re-crown the Love Island contestant.
