How much do you love the Foo Fighters? Probably not as much, it turns out, as the town of Cesena, Italy, loves the Foo Fighters.
In an absolutely adorable stunt, the town recently organised 1,000 drummers, guitarists, bass players and singersto come together to learn, rehearse and play the Foo's track "Learn To Fly" at once -- all in an effort to impress Dave Grohl and have him bring his band to play in the town.
The Rockin1000 project, created by Fabio Zaffagnini, was crowdfunded with more than €44,000, purely to encourage the band to play in Romagna for the first time since 1997.
Creating the video involved extensive auditions, rehearsals and planning, but the result is a remarkably tight recording for that many people playing at once. And if you're not convinced it's real, an 'on the ground' secondary video makes it clear that everyone was in time, more-or-less.
On Reddit someone claiming to be in attendance explained that a group of professionals was placed in the centre, "to serve as 'reference' for each type of musician. They recorded demos and put out advice on the website for us participants".
The experiment mirrors recent projects by Japanese noise artists The Boredoms to have dozens of drummers playing in time for extended periods.
Dave Grohl has so far not responded to the calls to play in the town, but knowing the nicest-guy-in-rock's reputation it's hard to imagine that he won't at least recognise the effort involved in this lovely work of art.
