The 27 Biggest Hair Color Trends of the Year
Celeb inspiration to bookmark and bring to the salon ASAP.
New seasons often bring on the urge for change. You probably can't uproot your entire life every time the mood strikes, but you know what you can do? Dye your hair! If you're looking to switch things up, there's plenty of hair inspiration straight out of Hollywood.
TRENDY: Mulled Wine
Megan Mullally's deep shade of burgundy is all the rage right now. To really bring out the complexity of a shade like this and keep it vibrant, use a color-enhancing conditioner like Bain de Terre Raspberry Plum ($8, amazon.com).
BLONDE: Natural Roots
Selena Gomez's ice blonde hair took nine hours to complete, but she made her life easier and embraced a new trend by leaving her dark roots intact.
BLONDE: Gold Ombré
Lauren Conrad's dark roots are a sharp contrast to her bright blonde ends, yet a subtle golden ombré manages to bring it all together. It takes a skilled stylist to pull off a job like this. Once you leave the salon, use a color-protecting shampoo like L'Oréal Paris Hair Expert Color Vibrancy Intensity Shampoo( $4, amazon.com) to keep hair healthy.
BLONDE: Hairline Highlights
Margot Robbie's look is a must-try, and it doesn't take much effort, either. "Add some delicate highlights around the hairline and shiny golden glosses in between," says Alissa Frum, senior colorist at Blackstones salons. "Also, getting a keratin treatment is a great way to help your hair rest in the summer. Healthy hair means shiny hair, and with color it's all about the shine!"
BLONDE: Buttery
If you're not into obviously dyed platinum blonde, something more natural can be just as striking. Achieving a buttery blonde look like Reese Witherspoon is easy to do, and will undoubtedly fool everyone into thinking you were born with golden locks.

BLONDE: Overgrown Roots
Overgrown roots are suddenly very fresh, especially when they fade as softly as Jennifer Lawrence's do. Looking to make things less dimensional? Go for a root touch-up spray like L'Oréal Paris Root Touch Up Spray ($11, amazon.com) before committing to a full process dye.
BLONDE: Cream Soda
If you're looking to lighten up, icy platinum and golden blonde aren't your only options. Cream soda blonde, seen here on Elisabeth Moss, is warm but still neutral enough to look good on almost everyone.
BLONDE: Icy
Going super, super platinum isn't an easy feat: It requires frequent maintenance and upkeep. The color looks especially chic when cut into a pixie like Michelle Williams'. One way to skirt a few extra salon appointments is to keep a crayon like the Bumble & Bumble bb Color Stick ($26, sephora.com) in your makeup bag.
BLONDE: Rose Gold Undertones
Second only to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's flawless sartorial sense is her long, blonde hair — and her color is one of the most requested from Ferrett's clientele. She loves how this particular shade of blonde doesn't have hints of white, but rather metallic flecks that catch the light in the sexiest way.

BLONDE: Sun-Kissed
Everyone wants a healthy, glow-y look, especially come summertime, and you can easily get it by lightening up your color. "We'll be seeing a lot of sun-kissed blondes this summer with creamy roots," says New York City-based celebrity hairstylist Matt Fugate. "There will be less ombré and more all-over buttery goodness, like Karlie Kloss."
BROWN: Balayage With Babylights
The answer to stealing Gisele Bündchen's gorgeous hair lies in combining a couple trends. "Balayage is still very popular, but now we're adding fine highlights — aka babylights — into the mix, too," says Mary Yalda, stylist at Fox & Jane in New York City. "Babylights allow for an all-over brighter look, yet you can still enjoy a low-maintenance do."
BLONDE: Grey Redux
Going grey is trending thanks to a crop of celebrities, like Evan Rachel Wood, who are ditching their signature colors for the neutral shade. It's not like the grey you'd expect from your great-grandmother, though; Wood's is a gradient hue that fades from black to grey. The result is chic, polished and refined — especially with a shorter cut like hers.
BROWN: Bronde
Jennifer Lopez's color is a cross between brown and blonde. Her honey-infused hue "is warm and has depth and dimension with subtle highlights," says Ashley Ferrett, a colorist at Serge Normant at John Frieda NYC. Use a split end-mending serum as needed, like Frederic Fekkai Salon Blow-Out Sealing Serum ($19, target.com).
BROWN: Caramel Highlights
Jessica Alba's warm caramel highlights light up her whole face. To mimic her laid-back look, give your hair some texture with a product like R + Co's Rockaway Salt Spray ($26, amazon.com).
BROWN: Warm Chestnut
When you're talking about a Pantene model, you know you're dealing with a seriously shiny mane. Priyanka Chopra's chesnut hue is what makes her hair so special, though. It's lightened around her face to emphasize her features and brighten up her entire look. The deep part adds volume, making it a particularly great style for those with fine locks, says Ferrett.
BROWN: Jet Black
Kylie Jenner and her sisters all have naturally dark hair, and they always look especially fierce when they go back to their literal roots. If you're new to the dark side, keep your brown or black hair healthy and shiny with a color-enhancing conditioner like Davines Alchemic Chocolate Conditioner ($16, jet.com).
