Edge of Tomorrow sequel is officially a go (correction)

Mission Impossible — Rogue Nation director joins

Despite a less than stellar debut at the box office, the sequel to Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's Edge of Tomorrow has been given the green light, according to Deadline.

Edge of Tomorrow, which eventually made $100 million in the U.S. market through digital downloads and Blu-ray purchases, developed a rabid following with genre fans. The movie followed Cruise's character, a military officer, who's brought into an ongoing war against a group of aliens. Things get even more complicated when he learns that the alien army has the ability to rewind time and predict the future. When Cruise's character is given the same powers, he teams up with a Special Forces agent (played by Blunt) to end the war.

Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote the screenplay for the first film, will also pen the sequel, with Doug Liman onboard to direct once again. It was originally reported that McQuarrie would be directing the sequel, but the writer later denied it. McQuarrie is also currently working on the sixth Mission Impossible movie, which will star Cruise in the main role.

Both Blunt and Cruise are rumored to return, but neither have confirmed or denied reports.

Correction: Although Deadline first reported that Christopher McQuarrie would be directing, McQuarrie tweeted that he would only be joining the film as a writer. McQuarrie confirmed Doug Liman would be retuning to direct the sequel.
