In Kennett Square, Latinos will finally get a real say

KENNETT SQUARE >> Since Latinos constitute more than 50 percent of the population, borough officials have agreed to set up an Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs, which will ultimately enable Latinos to have more of a say in borough matters.

“Let’s face it, there is a cultural and language barrier,” said Councilor Doug Doerfler. “This is a proactive step by council to get over this hurdle and it’s a big hitter that can reach all populations.”

Lindsey Sweet, a borough resident and immigration attorney who has worked with documented and undocumented residents, told officials that the new panel will enable Latinos to disseminate information about rules and regulations that might be culturally distinct.

“The truth is there are many Latino citizens here who are voters and potential voters, and there are undocumented residents in the borough,” she said. “The Latino Affairs Commission is a great way to engage political engagement of Latino residents, and cut through the lack of understanding of the political process and overcome fear due to a language barrier.”
