The BMW i8 Finally Gets A Racy Color

Finally, here’s an i8 from BMW wearing a warm color. It will have to be faster than the silver ones, no question about it. It’s called Protonic Red, and that can’t be slow.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the i8 in Crystal White with blue accents a lot. But there’s a very good reason why many people find BMW i’s gadget-inspired color palette of silver, blue, white, grey and black a bit too conservative for a car that’s harder to get into than a Lamborghini Countach.

No wonder why you see wrapped i8s everywhere these days, with yellow being to the most popular aftermarket option. Funny enough, even BMW has a yellow i8 in one of their official press shots. But this was never an option at BMW dealers.

The Protonic Red is the first in a series of limited edition i8s BMW is cooking up at the moment, going on sale in September, priced at £112,535 in the UK, some £8,000 over the base model.

It comes with Frozen Grey metallic accents, W-spoke 470 light-alloy wheels painted in Orbit Grey metallic with hubs painted in Aluminum. You also get special seats and a plaque, but no performance upgrades this time.

Does that work for you, or would you rather go with the 50 shades of aftermarket yellow for the same sort of money, if not less?
