pumping station adoption

What is happening?

Due to the changes in legislation, from 1 October 2016 all eligible private pumping stations will transfer to your local water company. This means the water company will be responsible for the servicing and maintenance of these stations including the running costs.

Pumping station adoption

What is a private pumping station?

Pumping stations come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be located in driveways, gardens, roadside verges and other areas. Some homes or businesses have drainage systems with pumps located inside large manholes which you may not even know contain a pumping system. Pumping stations usually have external control panels containing the pump controls and the main electrics. These control panels are usually locate in small kiosks or buildings and may or may not have alarm systems with beacons on the top.

Is my sewage pumping station eligible?

The following criteria will be required for private pumping station adoption:-

  1. Was your station installed and pumping before 1st July 2011?
  2. Is your pumping station connected the main sewage network?
  3. Does it either serve more than one property, or, sit outside the property curtilage?

What happens next?

If you think you have a private pumping station that is eligible or you are unsure you need to contact your local water company to register or to find out. The current owners are still responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of their stations until they are registered and transferred over. This includes any work the station requires and the payment of any electricity bills and other associated costs prior to adoptions.
