Yesterday, I shared where fear thrives—it’s preferred breeding ground if you will. If you missed that post, you can catch up here.

Today I want share a second environment where fear thrives in abundance.

It’s called the …

unknown

Nothing aids to the spread of fear’s growth like the unknown. Fear loves it when we choose to stay unaware.

Let’s take our finances for example. Some of us deal with a certain level of uncertainty when it comes to our finances and we’re OK with it. We don’t examine our money, we don’t add up the late fees to see how much we’re wasting annually. We choose not to know because we don’t want to face the truth. We just might have more money than we think but don’t want to face our overspending. We don’t want to deal with that truth so we willfully choose ignorance.

When it comes to our health, we won’t get ourselves checked out because we fear it may be something we don’t want to hear. So we choose not to know, but in the meantime, fear grows and nags at you and has you knocking on death’s door when all it could be is indigestion but you’re never really sure.

When our spouse is late getting home or the kids forget to call when they get to their destination, the unknown tears at us and causes great anxiety because we don’t know. Fear lives in the unknown. Instead of assuming everything is OK, some of us automatically assume the worst.

Light or exposure is one sure way to eradicate this particular breeding ground.

Expose the unknown to the light of the Word, the light of God’s truth, the truth in general (yes, I overspend or yes, I need to eat better) and you dry up fear’s breeding ground.

You don’t have to live in fear or be fear’s breeding ground.

Exposure and light are the best medicines.

  • Yes! So true. I work with purpose-driven business owners & world changers and this type of fear comes up often! I created my Income Accellerator Calculator for this very reason. It helps my clients map out exactly where they are now and then map out how to get to where they want to be. So powerful! Dave Ramsey also talks about this in his Financial Peace University program. When you understand (shed light) on the unknown (or get someone to help you light it up) it is amazing how powerful it is.

    • Stephanie, finances can be such a huge unknown for so many people. And if you never learned how to be responsible with money or learn how it works this unknown causes great fear and you feel like you’ll never make progress and you’ll “always” be this or that. Glad for you and other experts to help educate us! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
