A man's deep masculine voice was previously thought to have evolved to attract and woo ladies as potential mates. However, a new study by Penn State University reveals that it may not be the case after all.

Researchers from Penn State University found that men developed deep masculine voices to intimidate other males or rivals. They conducted their study by analyzing how people react to deep masculine voices. While lower and deep masculine voices attracted women, other men reacted strongly to them.

The Penn State University team reportedly gathered thousands of recordings from primates like apes and orangutans around the world. After listening to the recordings, they noted that voice pitch is linked to mating patterns, NBC News reported.

Humans also have the highest difference in voice pitch as females have higher voice pitch and men have deep masculine voice compared to other primates. The study was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

In their human experiments, they had a group of men and women rate the recordings, UPI shared. They found that the subjects found deep masculine voice more dominant. The researchers tested men with deep masculine voice and found that they had lower cortisol levels and higher levels of testosterone indicating that they are healthy and in great condition. This suggests that a man's deep masculine voice could indicate their health and vitality.

As for women, researchers found that while some of them liked deep masculine voice, some did not. They did not find any pattern on whether women like deep masculine voices better, according to The News Independent. However, the researchers found that other men consistently found deep masculine voices to be more intimidating and thus reacted more strongly.
